Grail: The Ultimate Haze Hybrid

I wanted to ask you something...I have some old seeds(won't germ since late '90's unfortunately due to bad storage)that are f'4s made in '91 but from your f1 stock originally that I believe were simply labelled 'Haze x NL' and bought from you between '86-'88 in person by a NewZealander who lived in NorthLondon but thats all I know 4 sure....I received them as F2's(OP)in '89 and took them a couple gens with a 4/4 ratio. They were between 10 and 17 week bloomers once at f2 or f3 and I thought had lots of Thai influence(from NL or Haze?) due to the hints of citrus amongst the piney-Hazey flavour, very foxtail buds and skinny alligator leaves in some pheno's plus very occasional inter-sex flowers. Some examples had very soaring highs and they were usually the freakiest looking girls. But seemed quite different from NL5H to me?
Any ideas what they were please Nevil as its always bugged me? A very Crazy Haze indeed.
Thanks in advance,much respect Resinator

PS.I Really,Really want some decent NL5Haze(as much as I love you and SB's other Haze work)I miss it terribly,Is that a possibility anytime soon(even F2's)? ;]

great post

Meaty,Incensey,Musky and Piney

i especially lov the description of your old nl5haze ,this was a point i tried to touch on on my latest post

labelled 'Haze x NL' and bought from you between '86-'88

this was a question ive asked but not a direct response

from your description sounds like, seems to me this is the female that wasnt saved and flowered forever X to (nl#1 X ruderail)

im very curious as to specifics myself ,as this one ive wanted to taste as bad as the old nl5haze

This is the description of Haze C.

From the mid '80s onward, descendants of Haze C penetrated most corners of the world. Americans and Canadians (enterprising buggers) set up projects throughout South America and more. American and Italian diplomats (spooks) came in embassy cars and bought substantial quantity's of seed for God knows what projects. Those were strange times! Feral hill-billies from Canada and the U.S., who had been dirt poor for 7 generations, suddenly started earning money and sometimes they'd put their brightest young fella on a plane with a brand spanking new passport and send him off to see me. I've met some characters, but mostly they were good old boys and I did what I could to help them get to where they were going.

I once had a map of the U.S. and I put red dots where I'd (allegedly) sent seeds to, (just for my own private amusement). Let me tell you, those red dots changed that map.

The point I'm making with this stoned story, is that most of the wonders that I have tracked down, ended up being descendants of Haze C and NL5. Lots of experimental stuff that did not find it's way into the catalogue got sold to people who came to see me, often tailored to their particular needs. Varieties with a reliable provenance prior to '85 are more likely to be what we are looking for. I didn't ship to Australia and New Zeeland, being my own back yard, but even so, others did and I sold seeds to just about anyone with money who came to see me.

I hope I don't have to go back and delete this, I'm a bit stoned after smoking my first joint in two days. I'll remember this as the "Great Drought" of 2010.

Did one of those spooks before mid '84 happen to be this guy?

He would have blended in, but the real spooks were "suits". Some of them looked like they had never smoked a joint in their life. I used to like to fuck them up. I'd make them smoke a joint with me to prove they were "cool". You could see that in their own minds, they were involved in operation "deep penetration". Idiots, it was legal to buy seeds in Holland. It was fun to watch their fake personalities disintegrate under the influence of the latest rocket fuel. It was a bit of a sport to see how much money I could get off them. It was a general policy that people had to spend a minimum of $1000 to come and visit. I sold them good seeds though!
Usually they couldn't get away fast enough after they got wrecked. I had an electric gate, and they couldn't get out of the compound without me pressing the button. The idea seemed to make a couple of them panic. You've got to wonder what they did with the seeds though. Some of those scenes would have fitted in nicely in a Hunter S. Thompson book. Strange days!

Great story mate, I wonder how many spooks you converted to the Light side?

Btw, are you going to hit us up with another poetic smoke report and mixed bag tale soon?

Hemphrey: I'm more familiar with Deep Chunk than Haze, but tell me if I'm wrong here. A keepable Haze is around a 5% in his lineup? But that keeper is amazing?

I've heard a few people mention this but no-one I personally know has worked with it.

very wrong words

words from tom hill himself were along the lines of most phenos would be better than most other lines

The high is not consistent, this has always been my experience with this Haze. Regarding effect, most I'd rank as an up, cerebral, sociable, medium/high potency to varying degrees. Some though are incredibly friggen potent - a sometimes concerning intense high that lasts for 4+ hours. Of course these later types are the ones we enjoy most, or I do anyway. My experience has been that approximately 5% are absolutely outstanding, representing well this reputation/legend of the Haze high. There is some full-on hay in there too, I don't know, I guess I'd say that 10-20% piss me off as a waste of time? The vast majority of the line though falls somewhere between these two extremes. -Tom

The prob with the Tom Hill Haze is that it's too far inbred I think. If you check his forum on ICmag, he talks about how he maintains his lines like the Haze, Deep Chunk, and X-18. He does new generations of seed every so often, obviously inbreeding each time...he also doesn't do it strictly by generation, as he mixes in seed from multiple prior generations in each new generation. While that might not be a problem for the other lines, Nevil mentioned that Haze tends to get more cat-piss phenos (which he doesn't want) the more you inbreed it. I think someone said earlier in this thread that TH Haze is 20+ generations down the line, which I guess explains the '5% awesome' ratio he mentions.

i'd say that exact quote pretty much confirms what i've heard. keepers are only the best of best. so no, they weren't "very wrong words".

Thanks again for confirming this with a post from the man himself.

If so i would like to ask if you have any experience with the Rocket Chunk from Esbe?I have a total of 6 RC out now and they look just amazing..Any feedback regarding RC and yield/how it smokes and what moore...please post.

Bigherb, I'm curious, have you run Tom's Haze before?

I know there are many people who like Tom's work, but from my experience I have no choice but to give his haze offering an unfavorable rating.

I disagree with your "very wrong words" statement. In fact, I would argue that finding something acceptable, not spectacular, runs in the 5-10% range. I agree with Tom that there is "hay" in the line. I cringed when I read above that most of the phenos in his Haze line "is better than most other lines." Who said that, Tom?

I've run two packs (I know, I know, it's nothing) of Tom's Haze and ended up with 11 females. Only ONE would I consider to be a plant of acceptable quality. The other 10 ranged from pure garbage to average, at best. I would say that's a far cry from "better than most" if you ask me.

I could be wrong, but it is my understanding that Tom got his Haze from Positronics. I purchased some Haze beans directly from Wernard in 1995 and found them to be OK, but nothing memorable. What was memorable were the Silver Haze and NL5xHaze beans that I bought from Sensi Seed Bank during the same trip. I found the haze hybrids to be exceptional and some of the best Haze, if not the best, that I've ever had.

Let me give a little comparison of Tom's Haze to MNS Haze hybrids since the number of beans that were run was roughly the same. First, as stated above, I found 1 of Tom's Haze to be of acceptable quality out of two packs. Remember, that's acceptable NOT exceptional! By acceptable, I mean something that is better than average and worth working more to dial it in. Second, MNS Afghan Haze had several acceptable plants and 3 that were absolute winners. Oddly enough, despite the Afghan genes, I found the smoke to be very hazey and a few to be electric in effect. Advantage to AH by a landslide. Next, the Mango Haze. This is a very similar story to the AH but substitute NL and SK for Aghan. For sake of brevity, I'll just echo the same from the AH results. Finally, the SSH. I had several different effects to the SSH ranging from stoney to hazey. The haze dominant phenos of the SSH were just in a different league compared to Tom's, major vs minor with Tom on the bottom.

I know that I'm comparing haze hybrids to something that is billed as a "pure" haze, but IMO the hybrids are just a better product all around for the typical grower. I haven't even compared the Neville's Haze which would be more fair on the lineage front, but I'm trying to make a point here. Simply put, MY experience with Tom's Haze sucked. From Joe Consumer's (me) point of view, if brand X ranges from mostly bunk with a few average plants in the mix, and brand Y, Z etc. is putting out consistantly good quality with a few absolutely exceptional plants in the bunch, who do you think is going to get my money?

Clearly, a much larger sample would need to be run to make a definitive statement, but the typical grower is only going to run a pack or two of beans when making their selections. FWIW, Tom lost my business because if I have to choose between one acceptable plant out of 20 beans or 5+ with the exceptional one mixed in, I'm going for the 5+ with the occasional exceptional plant every time.

Nice response Bean Cracker.

I have heard mixed feedback from people I know regarding Tom's lines as well. Most of the positive things I hear are that they make good hybrids from people online. My friends who actually grow his stuff typically cull them quickly.

Weird thing is that I always noticed GOOD plants make good hybrids. Plants that stand out as exceptional are the ones you usually use so how is TH's line good for breeding if the exceptional plants are found in such low percentages?

Isn't it easier to breed from larger populations of good plants? I always thought this to be the case.

Dude, that early 90's NL x Haze ruined me for most companies sorry attempts at a Haze hybrid. Wernard's Haze IMO was NOTHING like Neville's. Nev's had the character and flavor Wernard's had the same name period! Purple Haze was fricking acid NOT ganja! But TH has that "famous?" purple haze pehno that everybody? wants. Who wants it? I thought the purple pheno RARELY if EVER had the high that made Nevilles Haze famous worldwide?

Anyone know anything about the Kwazulu from World of Seeds? The "real" history of the Zulu tribe fighting off 100 soldiers each while blazed on this strain of ganja (?) made me grab a couple packs to see if it is truly lightning in a seed. Any info/experience stories appreciated.

IMO,
