Fem seeds and there impact on the future of the species known as cannabis.

Well, isn't that interesting Cytrax. Anyone got any theories on how this could happen?

This seems simple to me how a male is found in "fem" seed...If not by accidental pollenation, or seed mix up...

If the plant was hermaphroditic.

If the plant is self-fertilization the zygotic ratio is one homozygous female to two heterozygous females 1:2

In the offspring there will be females, males and herms...Basically if a plant is hermaphroditic and you self it you will get some plants that are hermaphroditic and some that are normal.

This is a prime example why stressing tests are so important, not only with making fem seed but also for basic M/F breeding, everyone should know there plant. And know what it is.

I don't see where the male comes from KRK, but I agree with this:
..Basically if a plant is hermaphroditic and you self it you will get some plants that are hermaphroditic and some that are normal.
Anyway, Cytrax's plant doesn't qualify as a true male for the same reason NL5 was not reversible, no pollen.

Was NL#1 reversible Nevil?
I never tried it Kyle, I had males. It was the forgotten NL1 male that started many an Indica line.
I was interested in reversing NL5, because none of her brothers/ relatives would reinforce the 5 characteristics. Sometimes it happens in cannabis, a throwback to a past ancestor.

But not in Humans?

But not in Humans?
Anything with a Y chromosome. I've been suggesting that the Y is responsible for the mechanism for throwbacks and that this is an advanced survival mechanism in species that have 2 sexes, one with a Y (some fish have a different mechanism, Z from memory). Chimera is correct when he says that cannabis and humans are obligate outcrossers. Nature has found it's own way of "remembering" which ancestors were worthy or reinforcement.

imo,,,the "Y" chromozone seems to be involved in repair-cycles thats why it is the shape it is,,,the shape of the chromozone has been re-aranged and recombination is limited

neville, what is the background for your suggestion that:

"that the Y is responsible for the mechanism for throwbacks and that this is an advanced survival mechanism in species that have 2 sexes,"

I only have a loose understanding of genetics but have always seen it explained that the ancestral alleles are located on the X and Y is where the majority of the mutations occur making imo Y a very important tool to keep unless you want your population to remain stagnant (no/few mutations).

And so we reach the cutting edge. At this point, no one can dredge up somebodies thesis on why a fem seed should produce an apparent male that did not produce viable pollen.
Suddenly everybody is quiet. Now is the time to prove how clever you are. Stick your neck out, come up with a hypothesis. Isn't this what science is all about?

I've already taken the position that fem seeds can only be produced if the female used to provide the pollen is carrying a latent (or not) herm/intersex gene. A true female will not produce viable pollen.

I suspect that the strongest evidence against my position may come from the example we are now discussing, but you can hardly expect me to make your argument for you.
I may as well go back to getting stoned and talking to myself.

there are a few different types of sex chromozone systems,,,1 is the "active Y system",,the other is the X/autosome,,,i subscribe to the X/autosome system when discribing sex chromozones in cannabis,,,

so ive got no problem explaining how males can come from feminized seeds...X/Autosome sex systems just evolve males,,,its that simple

the only way a plant willnot produce viable polen is if the indervidual carries a sterility mutation,,,

its easy for me to expalin because i subscribe to the X/autosome dosage system

We could make a much more accurate hypothesis if we actually knew the method of production on these seeds.

Do you believe that a true female could reverse and form pods? They just wouldn't produce viable pollen?

rick if it so easy then why are you not working in a genetic lab wearing a white coat makeing advancements and head waves in genetic science.

Reality is rick you dont know and science is still scratching at the complexity of just how nature works.

Yes I do.

PS
I suppose I'd better qualify that. I believe that a true female will produce some pods on a plant that is primarily female. Of course, that could be attributable to poor technique. I believe that with better teks than I used (GA3), you might get a female that does not exhibit any female traits (much like the male previously described), but the pods would be empty (most likely) or have sterile pollen.

Oh, I believe Sam used the term 'true female' to describe plants that would NOT do that.

Why would you get any males at all?

I don't have any evidence of that from personal experience. It may also be a case of the tek not suiting the plant. You would have to consider that he would not make a statement like that lightly, but I'll go with my gut and say that some signs of sex reversal should be possible with the right tek.
Why would you get any males at all?
And this is the question that intrigues me. I don't know. The answer to this may also answer other questions.

Yes I do.

thats the bit I'm at odds with the fact it can produce balls etc shows it has the mech to do so, so like I stated earlier it would be PMS/CMS and not IMO "true female" personally I think its easier to find good Females than it is to find good males (could talk about inconsistant males?)

As to the seeds/plants in question I think they were Big Blubbas done by GHS is that right? to me theres the problem right there...

horseshit IMO, they have found MADC ie MALE assoc etc etc, they find it via DNA so kinda blows that one out the window Rick... Y oh Y do you insist with this? do you just ignore these FACTS?

essentially a TE remnant in the cannabis genome located only on the Y. The authors speculate that this insertion of the TE is what caused the differentiation an X chromosome into a Y chromosome.

I give up.
