EARLY QUEEN: hangin with the queens

^^^They really took off!!!

Yeah, frightening isn’t it? The 2 big girls have been pruned 3 times with as much as around 10 inches taken each time. It’s been a fortnight since they were last cut back and they are starting to look like one monster plant. The largest of the non clones is 54 inches tall and the fence is around 72" inches high so things could get a bit interesting. God knows how tall they would grow untouched, definitely to tall for these environs.

Reckon those 2 on the right will make it to the top of the fence? If so you could try some of the netting in the link below. You can bend to crazy angles and keep the height way down.

I reckon it just might Comrade Harry so I’ll have to do something but it will have to be a bit simpler than netting. Worst comes to worst I can just cut them back again but I’ll try bending them first. I will also try a bit of ‘super cropping’ as suggested by Comrade Fun back a few posts or so.

general depature

hey all!! hey mirnavi, i was wondering with a backyard grow, whats the deal with light pollution?..
-hey fun, harry, Cpatient... don't think i've made your acquantance.. welcome!
- Heres one for all the CoCo growers... so i was at a hydro store the other day, and all they had was nutrifield.. boo! , sorta. the dude was tellin me that apparently Canna had released a memo, stating that their CoCo was the superior product on the market.. this then led to them being taken to court by 4 other companies in a class action, whereby they then had to retract the statement! Don't worry, Canna. We know ur right!! i don't understand the logic. Canna's CoCo has been around for awhile, so when putting together a new product, wouldn't the thinking be- equal quality, beat em on price? ..or some order like such?! nEway...

- i'v also got a question for all regarding flushing.. sometimes we get set in our ways or lazy or apathetic... but how do u guys go about yours.?
- i'd picked up a bottle of gen hydro's 'Flora Kleen', awhile back, so been using that, but its almost gone.. so i figured i'd get advice and re evaluate that part of my MO. what i been doing is about 1 1/2 weeks prior, i flush with said product, after that, its just water, perhaps some cannazym..

- finally, has anyone tried 'BOOST ACCELERATOR' by Canna?? this thing is waaayyy pricey- in australia, 1ltr bottle retails for $200!! wouldn't have given it time of day, but in talkin to the guy, NO ONE'S BUYING!! so he sold it to me at half price.. i'v been finding that it shaves perhaps a week off the flower time.. yield, it'll take me a bit longer to judge that..

*so i know this aint early Queen specific, but i understand that many who read the thread would love to pop in but aren't workin with the queens, so like minarvi's bug finder idea, this would open the thread up a bit...

p.s. judging by my girls, mold shouldn't be a problem.. the bud structure has a comfortable amount of stretch,, sweet! ....... . .jj

*(edit) sorry minarvi.. been hectic of late. pics will come, just gonna be a bit.

As Pauline would say, please explain.

I guess you are talking about artificial light during the night but the only light my garden gets during those hours is from the moon.

Where's the pic of your sick plant?

Hi Jondojoando, regarding flushing, this is a subject I've spent many an hour pondering on, agonising over, well maybe not agonising but it is a concern, haha. Is denying a plant nutrients tantamount to torture? Are plants sentient and if so is it then right to treat them this shabbily, and even if not sentient does that really make an ethical difference? And does such rough treatment alter the vibe of the plant. Animals, humans, earthworms all release certain hormones when stressed so why not pot? Maybe tonight when the lights go off I'll play some Biosphere and ponder some more, lol. Just downloaded a Bill Laswell CD called Dark Massive Disengage, haha, what a name hey. Sounds great too.

hey minarvi, good to read of your progress towards the goal of eventual harvest and the enjoyment of the journey. your plants are looking good! no banana special?

Hi brothers,

This is a great thread, so much action going on... word JJ, itsbeenfun and minarvi... two indoor grows and outdoor grow...word!

Thanks for doing the EQ brothers... I was intrigued when Nevil added some pedigree info in my g-13haze thread...

Also wanted to say whats up to Cannabis Patient. Great grower my mns brothers and sisters... nice to see him pop in...

Keep the great work up... you got me wanting to join in this great thread but unforutantely, I am not in possession of these great gentics... yet :p

Peace,

CM

your plants are looking good! no banana special?

Banana special, lol.

As soon as I noticed that this was your first post I twigged. Good to see an agronomist has arrived on the thread, welcome to Niceland.

Here's a question. You might have read I give my plants weekly applications of soluble potash when flowering starts. To frequent?

A friend is supplying me with earthworm juice which I'm considering putting in the potash solution. Comments?

freakin nice one chana!! haha.. cheers matey!! soon soon, jj

sorry, in a hurry... cheers all, Harry, senimilla13, as we starve our ladies in unison... hey canguro.. got pic minarvi.... sweet
- any mate of chana' is a mate of mine..good to meet u, Cannabis Patient!

I guarantee that cannabis plants are stressed while flushing...but it most likely results in the production of additional resin which is what we're usually looking for:) It would be very interesting to measure changes in defense and stress gene expression levels during a flushing period.

Cheers!

I wonder if “stressed” equates to pain and suffering, and what that means at the end of the journey as our synapses and neurons explode and cavort?
Pondering ethics is a hobby of mine, so if you want to kill a party just ask me along, lol.

Flowering

To fully understand 'flushing' and other 'stress' methonds a seperate thread needs to be started to document if any of these are relavant or just a part of nature and a trigger for the plant to 'finish' and 'protect'. Its dangerous ground to speculate in what is truth here. I tend to believe that its the coarse of nature that brings 'flushing', depleteing soil at years end may be considered 'stress' or the 'natural' coarse of the soil and 'triggering' the plant to 'double down' and get it done.

One of the first crazy things i read about cannabis was 'stressing' the plant for for resin production and the method was driving a nail though the stalk near harvest time. I must admit some of these methods have seemed to increase resin production in cases but a co-operative grow/experiment is the only path to an answer on this. There could be many factors to the co-op experiment...nutrients, water, light(UV), Co2 concentration, scarification, yada,yada,yada...

Who knows guys this could evolve into a new thread, but until then...All hail the Queen...

Peace:D

The mysterious role of potash and other promoters

Here's a question. You might have read I give my plants weekly applications of soluble potash when flowering starts. Too frequent? A friend is supplying me with earthworm juice which I'm considering putting in the potash solution. Comments?

Well, potassium has no direct role in promoting or assisting flowering in most plants, however, it's been long promoted as being beneficial at this phase of the plant's life (a useful myth, commercially speaking). Nevertheless, as a macronutrient its presence is critical at all stages due to its various roles in ion exchange & nutrient transport, photosynthesis, respiration and enzymic catalysis.

Here's a neat acronym: C. H O P K'N S CaFe; Mighty good (but) Not always Clean. CuM'n CoZ'n MoB(y)

carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen sulfur, calcium, iron, magnesium, sodium, chlorine, copper, manganese, cobalt, zinc, molybdenum, boron.

But, nutrients don't regulate growth; plant hormones do, (viz. auxins, cytokinins, florigens and phytochromes). Photoperiodism is understood to initiate the formation of floral primordia. Gibberellin is also critical in floral initiation.

As regards photoperiodism, where does Cannabis sit? Is it a Short day plant (SDP) - only flowering with increasing dark (night) periods, or a long day plant (LDP), which only flowers with decreasing dark periods?

It'd be interesting (and challenging) to try to develop a flowchart of inter-related phenomena in relation to this question, as it's undoubtedly complex - you're looking at a gamut of factors including heat, water and incident radiation fluxes, enzymatic activity, phytochrome response to frequency range of incident radiation, turgor pressures, (possibly) [CO2] concentrations at stomatal surfaces, relative relationships between ionic concentrations of the macro- & micronutrients and no doubt a few other things I can't recall at the moment (mycorrhizal relationships, soil ecoflora, positive vibes and the 'right' touch, etc. :)). As for the earthworm juice, I dunno, except that as a general rule of thumb, earthworm castes are recognised to be a good source of carbon, organic matter (erm, carbon again?) and a complex of microbia - I can't see how EWJ could exert any beneficial effect on flowering of these plants, but as you well know, it's great for the soil's health.

In summary, and specifically, weekly applications of potash are unlikely to be a problem unless they're at such high concentrations that you're inducing potassium toxicity - and your girls will tell you if that's the case. And given the highly fertile profile in which these babes have their roots, it's unlikely that you'll see a K deficiency, and also, that particular soil profile has a relatively good binding capacity to retain ionic K (i.e., clay component is significant). It's a bit like a Mortein ad, eh?

I always thought that stressing a plant slowed down it's growth processes way before it slowed down it's cannabinoid synthesis, therefore a greater concentration of what you want in a diminished yield of plant material

Flushing could be painful for the plant, but not anything worse than what they'd face in Mother Nature, senescence is part of their life cycle, so I don't think they mind too much, personally I prefer to think of all the loving care and compassion I've shown my plants throughout their life instead =)

Great thread btw

Great post Comrade Canguro and thanks for taking the time.

Well, potassium has no direct role in promoting or assisting flowering in most plants, however, it's been long promoted as being beneficial at this phase of the plant's life (a useful myth, commercially speaking).

My God, I feel like a 4 y.o. who has just been told that Santa Claus is a crock! I just read an article that basically says the same as you have and it even quotes Peter Cundall as pushing the potash for flowers meme. In a Vegie Patch #8/02 Factsheet - Gardening Australia - ABC fact sheet, writing about growing tomatoes, Peter Cundall suggests "many of (the tomatoes) are in flower and starting to form their first fruit, and that is because of the sulphate of potash that has been put around them".

I’ve been in the habit of using soluble potash on my girls as they begin flowering because of some amazing orchid displays I’ve achieved which to date I have put down to the use of granular potash on those plants and I will have to rethink my approach. The first article I linked to concludes with; But in most cases, you can be assured that it's not a potassium deficiency if your plant is healthy-looking. Well my girls certainly couldn’t look any more healthy so they are sure not deficient in potassium.

As regards photoperiodism, where does Cannabis sit? Is it a Short day plant (SDP) - only flowering with increasing dark (night) periods, or a long day plant (LDP), which only flowers with decreasing dark periods?

I think we can safely say cannabis is a Short day plant which commences flowering as the night hours increase as we approach Autumn. As flowering begins we growers want everything possible to be assisting the plant to produce the maximum amount of flowers that is possible. My Early Queens have begun flowering and I’m of two minds as to whether to continue to use potash and if I do I’ll do it fortnightly.

As for the earth worm juice, I normally cut out nitrogen type fertilisers once flowering commences but I've heard great things about this particular potion that a friend produces. Her garden has never looked better and her flowering plants are amazing.

Thanks again Comrade, stick around and if you are around my environs post harvest you can taste the wares. :)

Comrade Harry, what are you on about? I would suggest that if a plant was conscious, denying it nutrients would be the least of its problems. It would be more concerned about you harvesting it and rolling it into a joint.

I was always under the impression that flushing had more to do with improving the taste when smoked by ridding the plant of all the crap that it has been fed by the indoor growers during its growing period. Often times it is obvious that greedy commercial hydro growers don't do this which is why I hate smoking dope grown under anything but natural conditions.

Anyway, I agree with Comrade Fun.......All hail the Queen...!

Hey Bud, maybe, but hydro girls ripen up without going on a diet, so I dunno :)

It would be intersting to know how much wieght on average you do lose and if the final product is indeed any frostier. Starving the girls just when they are stacking on the weight, hmmmmm.
Yeah, Mother Nature can be a bitch, and re senescence, with every breath we are a little older too but even on my death bed I'll want a good meal or 2. Dying is going to be bad enough without the nursing home starving me too. :D

What am I on about? That's an excellent question Minarvi but I'll need a few more life times to do it justice, haha,
I love the taste of well grown unflushed hydro but yeah, some hydro tastes awefull, but then some people do terrible things to their plants. Flushed plants remind me a little of those old skool anorexic models doing their thing on the catwalk. I can't but help wonder what they'd look like with a little extra weight and a bit more colour in their cheeks :p

All very good and valid points guys. Its one of those complicated questions that may not have a difinative answer as simple as a yes or no. It may be something that is of personal preference... do you like your coffee black or with creme and sugar?

Either way in the end its still a cup of coffee.

Its hard to go wrong the natural way like minarvi's garden. You add your favorite amendments, juice with some tonics and such, let mother nature take care of the rest. Beautiful, natural, pure cannabis.

A Hydro type eviroment like JJ's you have to mimic what nature would do. So its a good question to ask. In my experiences I prefer to taper the fertilizers off to zero a day or two before harvest. Not flushing so to speak, but not over doing it at the critical point where flavor may be defined. My 2 cents anyway.

Peace guys:D

should we build a dam?

Holy crap!? ..haha- thought it open up the thread somewhat.. talk about floodgate!! nice..

**eq2 has gotten a touch of mold!!! caught it early, so won't lose none. it's the superskunk leaning pheno.. #4 doin great. took her today to meet the sun.. here's a couple of shots from today, this being day56, seedplant-

*to be fair, #2was fat, and i mean real fat.. actually, both girls are, but #2 is stupid fat.. i may post a sillouete shot to illustrate this..
- their girth kinda has me befuddled, cause i remember that while i was researching her, the thread i most referenced (downloaded all the pics!) was done by a dude named barletta,- and his girls were average to real skinny. the seedlings looked identical, the leaf pattern the same, but they seemed to strecth and grow a long skinny cola(he didn't do any multiple branchers)-- whereas mine are just like at a McDonalds carpark, like 'f*k it, we'll just eat here,eh?' -- and they never made it out the carpark!!? they don't call or nothing. they just sit there eating... ..perhaps i should flush em with a chocolate thickshake and an applepie....

ok, minarvi, i swear next post i'll entitle 'bug watch'.. sorry brother, thanks for your patience..... my lifes like that. cheers if possible, jj

Woa BABY!!!

Hello Miss Early Queen colita!!! I'm in luv JJ:p I too see the Super Skunk(Afghan x Skunk#1) being a major player in this Hybrid. Last night i was reading the Early Haze description and it seems EP play a big roll in the flovor department...I hope it tastes like EP! Seems it may pass on even to EQ X (Afghan x Haze)...'NICE'...

I dropped my Pink Floyds into a shot glass shortly after putting all of the peices together, wink, wink...

Great job JJ! She sure is 'Nice'. Its gonna make the next 40 odd days either torture or its gonna make 1st harvest that much better:D

I personally have never done a grow log or even had a 'handle' on any of these sites, always a lurker. I must say this Co-Operative grow has been VERY rewarding so far and i think it gives the variety EQ a depth that others cannot. The MNS descriptions are vary vauge yet very precise here @MNS. They give you some perameters but your so pleasently surprised with what you get in the end:D

Great Job Guys!

Peace

puppy love

hey fun.. u think ur in love now? just u wait.. soon they'll start plumping up and stacking on them lovely voluptious curves....... best u start reseaching engagement rings.... .. ..jj

p.s. i agree. not wishing to be vain, but i think the thread will convince a lot of people of the potential of a pack of the Queens.. .. i know if i'd seen this back then, i'd be like ,'hell yeah, i'm getting that for sure!' what is it, like $45-$60 for a pack?? too nice.. ..

p.p.s. can't wait for a smell report from u, and others.. i've said it before, but i smoke too many cigarettes.. hopefully u'll recognise the smell, having worked with her parental lines plus a whole bunch of other strains..... ....... ....... ... .jj

(edit)my belladonna trial is comin along nicely too and i'm in love with the sweet mango perfume of one of em.. gotta do a post on the 'who doesn't..' thread soon.. damn minarvi, just realised i was meant to do the 'bug watch'.. i'v already got the pics uploaded, just couldn't resist a 'live' 'postchat' with my good mate IBfun!!
