Here is a lil story bout 'pif'. If you have been on the forums for a while in the various 'strain description' sections of the various canna-boards, you have heard of 'pif'. I have had pif many times, and I ABSOLUTELY love her. She is a legend in the ny/nj/ct/pa area. Here is why.
Pif is a KILLER haze that is available in (mostly) small quantities. Generally $20 bags that are ~1g. It is most available in Dominican neighborhoods. I was going to a 'spot' near (google earth) Colombia Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan (spanish harlem) for 6-7 yrs getting these bags. I started going 'uptown' to get bud in ~94. David Dinkins was mayor of NY, and it was a very professional setup to get weed and coke at the same spot. I never messed with coke. I used to get bags of 'schwag' for ~60/oz to resell @ 20-30/'eighth'. When i got the weight, I would always get bags of kind bud for myself. They were sold as 'dro'. AMAZING haze/garbage/compost/turned soil/meat/funk smell to the buds. BEST SMELLING WEED THAT I'VE EVER SMELLED, HANDS DOWN. And I got it in 20's on the block... The weed was never available in bulk, and once I got a connection, it was still 500 an oz. The most headie kindbuds ('vermont' headies, 'Jack', WW, blueberry) were not prevalent, but could be had (in different circles)for 3-325. So at the spot where weed was cheapest (the schwag zips would go @130), 'DRO(pif)' was still 500.
Guliani cracked down on the 'business', and it became a 'hustle' ~98/99/00 sometime. ~ the same time, the weed started to be called 'pif'. I never even cared. I just called it 'garbage', cause the smell MOST reminded me of a ripe, vegetable garden in a landfill. It was DEFFO some kind of haze. Well, I stopped getting served ~2001/02 after 9/11 and I cut my hair, and shaved... friends of mine were getting it on and off until ~'06 The cut is the same today as it was the first time I smoked it, and asked myself if it was laced. (It's not, lol).
Now, I was young, and 99% of what I smoked was dirt weed. I rarely saw KB's, and never had more than 3-7g at a time. When you are young, you sometimes buy pretty buds that are early, or kif'd, or just smoke shitty. But pif was consistently FLAME. DELICIOUS weed that took me to outer space. So is it possible that the 'setting' has so much to do with the pif legend? Are 30+yo guys like me turning it into 'lumbo' because it was the first WHOA weed we got?
Here is why I ask. I have had some of my outdoor buds go out to younger folks who know about pif, but know what frosty indica looks like, purple buds, etc... But they DEFFO know pif, as my old 'spot' is ~4mi in a straight line from where they sleep (and the Hudson river is ~1.5mi). The reviews that I have gotten on the Spice, 'piney' Shit, MW, and Aurora B are that it's every bit as good as pif. Do I believe it? No, pif is my 'smoking grail'. But is it my MEMORY that makes it so? Really, I was asked if my (no one knew it was 'mine'..) weed was laced, whether I get from the Dominicanos, etc... People who know good weed, but have no idea how it happens...
The weed that I have that is closest to what I remember of pif (been ~10 mo since I smoked some, and ~2 yrs since I HAD some) is SSH. It is a hazier cut, but finishes in 12wks. It HAS the pif smell, but the SSH also has some 'extra'. The lemon/skunk/cheese are not in the pif. Like a heavy but dry at the same time haze.
Has anyone out there who has had 'block pif' or 'uptown pif' or anything else that they call it in the city (you KNOW the weed) run NH/MH/SSH in #'s to look? It is THE SAME as it was in 94. It MUST be a commercial cut that belongs (whatever) to whomever is running it in the #'s that it's THE weed to have in a 20million person metro area.
