Cloning Machine

Glad to hear you got your cuts goin, Kodiak :) The guy who turned me on to growing had (has) a DP Cough plant that was his 'standby'. He would grow other stuff too, but that plant stuck around for ~18+mo. I think he convinced himself :) It was a tasty, sweet hybrid, going ~60-65 days. Sativa stretch, chunky top, so commercially it was a keeper.

That guy actually hit me with the theory of under feeding before you clone. The thinking being that if the plant has to 'scavenge' for nutrients, it is more likely to throw roots to do that. I dunno. All I know is cloning in the winter in the basement without a heating pad SUCKS no matter how ya slice it.

What do ya have going in flower, Kodi?

Thanks Barletta :)

Yeah the DP Strawberry Cough (it's a skunk hybrid though not the real deal) is still to this date the best smelling plant I have grown. A very nice medicinal plant, I didn't keep it cause it was a feminized plant but I regret it now and then. Gotta try those SSH x SC fem some day.

I will be flowering some Kali Mist, Jock Horror, S.A.G.E, Russian Diesel and Oldtimer's Haze. I'm looking forward to this one, all the plants were pruned and trained for 10+ weeks before going into flowering so this will be a sweet grow. I can post some pictures once they get going.

I can't be sure of course but I would say the opposite when it comes to feeding plants before cloning. What I have observed is that the clones with the deepest green color can manage the longest time without roots while the ones with the lime green color have less of a chance. It all depends of course.

I was wrong about the airflow though. I increased it and the clones root even faster. This is probably true to a certain point.

Your cloning machine looks excellent, a possible way to improve it may be to drill (with a hole saw) some 1 3/4 inch holes in the lid into which you may place some offcuts of the foam cylinders which are used to insulate water pipes. This foam has a tiny slit which is convenient for sliding clones in and out and hence you will be able to move them with little to no damage.

hi b

I also agree that its better to have well fed (grow fert / N ) moms before taking clones to root. They do stay longer greener and they dont go pale green or yellow as easy/fast like mentioned above by Kodiak .

Hello guys

I agree L33t, the clones that come from well fed moms with a nice a deep green colour seem to make the transition from clone to rooted plant quite painlessly. Some of them never even lose their colour or get yellow leafs.

Good idea jon.e.b.good, that would be an improvement. The holes that I drilled are barely large enough to get the clones through once they have lots of roots but it's a trade off between light insulating the box and practical convenience.

I have pulled some thrity clones out of this box and most of them made it to healthy plants. The clones actually rooted so fast that I had time to include clones from the females that I grew from seed to the batch that I am flowering now. I change the water every three days or so and that seems to work fine. Some clones actually root in 5-6 days, growing some really long and fine white roots. All and all a very successful addititon to my setup.

Now I have clones of each female plant as well as extras that I can give to friends or use in breeding projects.

Hey Kodiak:

I just decided at the last second to try and clone one of my plants when I trimmed off two branches. I did some southern engineering and came up with a poor man's bubble cloner.

I just wrapped a 2L jar in White Duct tape. Reflects light/heat. 6" air stone in there. Nothing to it.

I put the cuts in yesterday. Water had been bubbled for weeks. I added 1Tbls/gallon maxicrop and a skoshy bit of LK. I changed the water today to about 1tsp/gallon Maxicrop and 1Tbls/gal of Liquid wormcastings.

I measured water temp. It stays right at 74F. I'm keeping the jar on the floor under light. The floor keeps the whole setup around 74-75F...the floor being the coolest place in the bedroom.

The cuts were off a plant that had been in 12/12 for 21 days.

Nice one SativaFan, that should work just as well as my setup.

It's all about the darkness, temps and airflow in the end.

I never added any nutes to the water as I think that will speed up the growth rate of algae, but a weak solution probably won't hurt. It might take a while for the flowering clones to root but surely not as long as in regular standing water.

You can add some seaweed extract in order to supply the clones with growth hormones as this will probably speed things up a bit. The auxin from the kelp will work wonders on the roots. The plants can't get enough of it, I put it in my nutrient mix and foliar feed it to them as well. Good Stuff.

Happy Growing Everyone :)

i know this is an old post but i have a question

did your stems go down into the water or was the water level down a bit so just the wet bubbles popping did the work ?

thanks in advance to anyone who has the answer/answers
