Red weed was Calabrese version of "brick weed". It was grown in fields, most of the times males and herms would not be killed so the crop was always seeded. Dried like shit.
it was not some connoisseur's special local product like cannoli siciliani or Lemons from Amalfi. It couldn't be, because it was illegal, so people risked to grow it only to sell it on the black market. When this happens, quality is not a priority. I believe during prohibition there was some SHIIIITTY tasting alcohol around in the states.
But taste and high were interesting, and the genetic seemed to be somewhat "original" to the land it was grown in, adapted to climate over decades. Or, better,

Cocaine consumption and glorification is a problem in the whole world.
I grew up in the south of the country, lived a bit everywhere and now living in north of Europe.
In every place I've been I've found for sure people using mainly cocaine and puffing weed only at the end to calm down, considering weed stuff for teenagers and coke something that make them go and feel included and active and grown ups.
And that's the CLASSIC delusional mentality of coke heads all over the world.
They started replacing sativas with faster flowering hybrids\indicas or auto flowering varieties from holland to get more harvests per year.
More sleepy and stoned effect is a consequence, not a marketing choice made by the mafia to please cocaine users.
And, again, this is happening everywhere, even in places with longer and more established\accepted history of cannabis.
I mean, even in legal markets in USA and Canada the priority is given to fast flowering varieties they're dominating the market, am I wrong?
If the goal is produce weed to make money than that's the result. if the goal is to promote cannabis culture than it is another story (but that's not)

Cocaine is easier and more profitable to deal with, occupies less space and costs 10x more. That's why it's more convenient for any drug dealer all over the world to carry coke instead of bags of weed.
