As long as you grow the plants short (by training/bending/tying or topping/prunning) they should grow fine n yield well too. I have seen great grows with all types of strain with 400 watters but it is important to keep the plants short for max yields.
400s are not really good for plants over 1.5-2ft tall so keep that in mind when you grow em.
For The Extra £10.00- £20.00 I Would Buy A 600 Watter
It Will Provide You With The 50-55 Watts Per Square Metre To Bud Whatever You Want
Bulb Prices Are Not That Much More And Are Far More Efficient Than The 400
So , Instead Of Maybe Having To Buy A Second 400 Watt Lamp For Flower , Stick With The Most Efficient Lamp, The 600 HPS
You Won't Regret It

Yeah the 600s are really good , only thing to consider is that with 600w lamps you may need to take some measures in order to deal with the extra heat esp if growing in a small cab/closet.
My friend grow's with a 250watt hps get's good yeild's, Thats one thing with american grow's that freaks me out they have aircons 1000wat hids must cost load's a month would be cheaper buying it then growing it I reackon.
Like everyone else say's put your hand under your light till it feel's comfortable with the heat. Depends on hood aswell fans also, the way I look at it is light a candle and see how close you can get your hand to the flame with out burning but feeling just nice but not really sure to be honest I would try 1foot(30cm) away from the top's of your plant's see how you go.
400w are great if heat is an issue...if not go with the 600 as it really puts out a lot more light...my 400=55,000lumens, 600w=95,000lumen but a 400w would work fine like L33 said about keeping them short
