Why Most Pot Sucks

Hi everyone, I'm new to these forums, and after looking at a lot of grows, it seems as if not everyone is doing it properly. Cannabis Culture Magazine has an excellent article (cannabisculture.com) titled "Why Most Pot Sucks". You will find it in back issue 57: Oct/Nov 2005, Jason King-Perfect Pot. I suggest everyone check it out.
Also, back issue CC.BO1:Best of #1 has numerous articles by DJ Short, creator of the "Blueberry" strain. Check out the article "Grow Organic". If everyone did this, they would enjoy what they grow a whole lot more.

Hey oldfart,
Im not sure that most marijuana does suck personally, I mean I rarely run across marijuana that is absolute trash. But I have infact seen trash weed before, so it may depend on your area and who you associate with if thats the case.
Ive never really thought there was one correct method to grow marijuana, Ive seen literally thousands of grows all different to some extent, but none of them "wrong" as long as the method produces marijuana to smoke. Sure some have more success then others, but it will all come with time.
In some circles, Jason King is not nearly the marijuana expert he would like the mainstream public think he is. Ive heard countless negative storys about the guy, but the average joe on the street knows of Jason because of the cannabible.
Growing organically is a method I fully support, but have often found yields to decrease in comparison to my hydro method and while I havent grown any of the DJ Shorts varietys directly, indirectly Ive grown the blueberry from another company and was impressed with the overall quality of the herb but found the plants rather retarded, and small yielding.
Generally speaking your cannabis is only as good as the genetics you're using. Thats one of the most important parts to growing, quality genetics. But from there, you have to have a solid method to make those varietys flourish. With some patience and a good cure(something most forget all about) you should be in the marijuana.

Good read, thanks for the link and welcome to MNS.

Im a meduser and sort of in a small way a new grower of my own medicine.
Im very proud of myself cuz for a 250 watt M.H. for vegging, and my 400hps Hortalux and the two fans
that i have going 24/7
My meds are awesome, im a 40 year smoker...
Good grows under my belt now, my meds dont suck
and i visit a compassion center on a regular basis,
there meds dont suck.
:)

I hear ya mate, its all relative. If you are used to holy grail buds then yeah, your not gonna be satisfied with anything less. I am also a meduser/new grower and I use a 400 hortilux w xtra UV, its my first grow but I cheated and smoked some straight off the plant:p and I was REALLY stoned from 1 bonghit:p :p . SUPER sticky, I do wanna use organics though. Many have said organics are the way to go when growing for medicinal needs, haven't tried it yet tho.

I have to say, although I have grown some outright crap in my time - sativas that wouldn't flower properly under lights and landraces that weren't at all adapted to growing indoors under lights, but every indoor commercial seed I have grown (bar one or two exceptions such as Nirvana's Skunk Red Hair) has produced good bud.

Commercial weed you see in the UK is usually awful, largely because they feed it as much nutes as it wil ltake (often too much) and hop it at 45 days with absolutely no flush, then sell it while it's still not fully dry, end result is bland, lacking in taste and potency, short duration of high and doesn't burn properly. I have a really old clone that has been around at least 15 years, we think it's NL5 x Skunk #1, not 100% sure, but it's definitely a skunk hybrid. Grown by myself or my friend who passed it onto me it's really, really good pot and takes 60 days. The exact same cut grown commercially locally produces junk buds, you wouldn't realise it was the same strain if you looked at the two types side by side, so I reckon 90% of the quality of buds is how you grow them. The biggest crime is cutting too early!

I'm 60+ years old and I concur with what you say. I've only been growing a year, but I been smoking for 40+ years. There's just no comparison between the weed I have grown over the last year....and what I've bought for the last 20-30 years, with a few notable exceptions along the way.

I just wish I could find and grow something like the Columbian sativa we used to get in the mid late 70's. My SSH was nice smoke, and I expect the batch of SSH i have coming will be as well....That said, it ain't anything like the sativas of old...at least IMHO.

hi sativa fan,
about the columbian you speak of,I remember it well, and was probably the best commercial weed I ever tried...with that being said
I recommend to you Nevils Haze,to me it is as close to Red Bud as anything Ive had since those glorius seventies we all miss.
{hehe ,at least those of us who were there} :D
when shanti make more Nevs,I think you would be well pleased to get some of them...really.

peace

Hey Scorpion!!

I'd love to try Neville's Haze. Trouble is I got the green tape on my last order. I'm too paranoid to order again from someplace outside the US. That's why I'm keeping this male I got. The last of my SSH is flowering now. I'm going to make seeds.

These people around here think this indica dominant stuff that is grown commercially in British Columbia, Washington, and Oregon is great stuff. And to be fair, sometimes I was able to get some good indica weed. I've never seen any sativas being sold around here. But then I don't know many people here either....so that's not significant of anything.

Another funny thing is if they saw some of that old Columbian weed they would probably scoff at it and toss it at first sight. Some of it wasn't very pretty at all.....but Oh My did it smoke sooooo nice!! I went to many a concert smoking that weed :D

niters

Ive got several Mexican and Columbian lines Ive collected throughout the years, but have mainly concentrated on MNS varietys indoors. Even a red Jamaican variety.

I keep hearing about these old Columbian strains, too bad for us young bucks .
Sounds like it was some really good smoke. I have heard that some of the Columbian had a goldish look to it, not real prettty at first glance but killer smoke.

Trust me, that old Columbian was really nice smoke. It didn't look golden so much as "brown" to me. It used to come to the people I knew in 20 Kilo bales, compressed in a compactor. Driven up from Florida at the time to our area in the mid Atlantic. The bags were full of seeds and stems. Rule of thumb was 50% was actually smokable from a 1 oz bag ($35.00 at the time) Pounds could be had for $300-$400.

Inflation sucks huh?

that description is spot on, even the weight and location, of the bales.
ya man, when the nevs is available, take the chance...its worth the payoff.
lousiana shrimp boats used to catch a few bales adrift too.
we paid 3500 a bale if we picked it up onsight.

ah the good ole days

Yup, infact one of the columbian lines I have was from golden colored buds. It was actually a one in a million find, and was one of the first times Ive been able to actually collect quite a few seeds from a variety of some primo herb. Usually you can get just a small amount of something good, and if your lucky get a few seeds. But this Columbian Gold was actually in plentiful supply, and I took full advantage of it.
You're right, the buds arent anything you would see in a Hightimes magazine, but it was the quality of the herb, its golden aesthetics and the fact you just dont see herb like that everyday that made it such a special find for me. The color gold doesnt exactly do it justice, but to say it was brown would leave a false impression as well. It was somewhere in the vacinity of a goldish brown, very light in appearance but not exactly gold as we all know it.

Here is an example of some of the better imported commercial marijuana that makes it way acrossed the border(s). While not the Columbian gold discussed above, similar.

Beautiful looking bud Jesse, looks really solid, what was the taste and high like?, peace, Herb

Hey Herb,
It was definitely some good marijuana, and it was extremely cheap too!

Ha!

Suckers!!

Around here, marijuana prices are directly correlated with how nice the marijuana looks. Ive seen marijuana going for $120 a quarter, that while nice and chunky, with lots of red hairs and resin was average in terms of smoke quality. And you routinely see quality cannabis, imported from Mexico and Columbia here that has had quite a trip to arrive to my point of origin in the US that is "low grade" in appearance, but the quality of the herb is anything but ordinary, more like extraordinary. But the quality varies ofcourse, but this was a finer example of what can be found with some dillagence.

The taste was not fruity by any means, but hard to pinpoint. I guess earthy would be a good term to use, most likely Mexican in origin because Ive found columbian to have a certain texture in its taste, a finer point that can be rather unique in comparison to the mexican that can be found. The high was a very clear, somewhat profound feeling that initiated good moods and lots of banter.

Columbian Gold in Fathers Dresser.

Hi! I remember in my youth my father having this Columbian Gold in his dresser, and looking at it in curiosity as it was in fact Gold in color, this I remember. As a child I remember these bales spoken about One High, and at least 30 bales on the garage floor. friends of my parents. early 70s. What about Gainsvillegreen? Stand Tall!! resinbud

Jason seems to be full of pot snobbery [ Im still waiting for CannaDianetics to come out. ] I used to hang at the CC forums when it was good and the thing that surprized me the most was that 90% of the Canadians there had never smoked mexican brickweed schwag, they had no concept of what really bad weed was.

Growing pot is like riding a bike and the reason you dont see training wheels on the Tour de France. The only bad weed now I see is peoples 'training wheels' stuff, and theres no market for that unless its bone dry around town. Everything else is usually top notch.

As living proof of all the weed forums out there good pot is a cat that can be skinned many ways. It grows in a 100 different mediums with a 1000 different fertilizers and still does great when its dialed in. To claim that one way is the best is silly to say the least.

.. Bottom line is this. Plants, like humans, do not want to be fed (or treated with) chemicals. And just like a human can live (for a while) on fast food, cigarettes, and beer, they will not be thriving. It’s the same with a plant. Though chemically fed hydroponic plants might look healthy on the outside for a while, they are not thriving on the inside. All the chemicals only serve to weaken the defenses of the plant, just like they do in a human.

Nature’s way of dealing with these weakened plants is to send bugs, viruses, molds, and other pathogen to eliminate the weak specimens. (Survival of the fittest, remember?) Again, this is the same way it works with humans..

While it would be nice to think that humans and plants work on the same level we dont. We consume living matter and work to decay it, plants take decaying matter and convert it to living. Unless Jason has access to secret research reports showing the weakening harm chem ferts do to plants over organic ferts and how it somehow makes them more apt to get pests I'll have to put that into the opinion file rather than the facts file.

.. In order for ganja to reach its ultimate potential quality, the plants must be cut off from food and thoroughly flushed with clean water for several weeks or more before harvest. ... The amount of flush time varies depending on the situation, but I generally recommend stopping all feeding and switching to pure water approximately one month before harvest..

Im not sure what strains (if) Jason grows but in my experience that last month is when a lot of weight gain occurs, especially the first two weeks of that. Removing ferts a month out from harvest for me is only going to kill my yields. I can cut off ferts anywhere from 5-10 days and when they are done I can see the plant is pulling what nutes are left out of the fan leaves.

I'll give him the point on curing since most people have experienced that. Most strains are better but some strains dont do much when cured. Unfortuantely I only get to cure about 10% of what gets made.

I dont buy into the whole weed potency is delicate and a reflection of how you handle it. " Rolling a joint decimates the herb if you break it up with your fingers " ?? I dont know anyone thats said that or anyone thats notice any difference in how high you get based on how you handle the weed post curing.

Speaking for myself I think anyone thats growing for themselves tries to make it the best smoking pot they can. Its the ones that are growing for profit that I can see wanting to use methods that give them the most weight for the number of plants in the quickest time. Organics and yield reducing lengthy flushes probably isnt going to sway them.
