I once did some experiments with UV light indoors.
The theory was that plants at high elevations are exposed to more UV light than plants at sea level and that plants increased resin production as a survival mechanism to protect the plant from harmful radiations.
Well the first time around the plants were not acclimatised and suffered severe burns. I tried again, taking care to get the plants used to the light. This time the plants did not suffer burns.
I tried a range of different varieties, but could not discern any difference in appearance, resin production or high. So much for that theory.
N.

ha that's awesome, as you say though they did show some acclimation the second time around as they didn't suffer burns, which is pretty interesting.

but it would take 100s-1000s of years of natural selection (evolution) to create plants that produced more resin, or whatever other mechanisms they could to protect against the UV. which is probably the case with a lot of high altitude plants. it's called directional selection, there's variation in any population of organisms, some plants would be better able to survive in the high UV levels than others, these would be more likely to pass their genes on and slowly over time the strain/landrace in this area would evolve to deal with the UV much better. it takes a long period of time though, acclimation can only go so far, it's like white people getting tanned, even if we expose ourselves to the highest levels and huge exposure times to UV we'll never be as dark as some african races, though over time we could evolve that level of darkness if UV was selecting for it (the opposite way it did when white races evolved from black ones in africa as they moved to european countries where it was colder, less UV, and we needed more vitamin D so we got paler to absorb more sunlight) black races acclimate in the same way if you took one from african and brought him alaska, he would become lighter in complexion, the same way we do from summer to winter. but he'd never become as white as us, though over 1000s of years it happened to us europeans in the past. anyway that's my 2c.

Hi L33t
Thanks for the question.

I've studied race horse pedigree's and I'll try to explain my conclusions. The two most prepotent sires who produced the highest number of stakes winners percentage wise were,
Stockwell and Kalamoun. Stockwell was called the Emperor of stallions. A study of the pedigree shows that Stockwell was line bred to two brothers and a sister in the forth remove. Whalebone, Whisker and Web. Whalebone was on the sire line (the Y line) and Web came through an unbroken female (X) line on the dams side.
Kalamoun was inbred to a brother and a sister in the third remove, Nasrullah and Rivas.
Nasrullah was on the sire line and Rivas was on the distaff (female) line.

I believe that it was the inbreeding to brothers and sisters (opposite sex strains) that led to this prepotency.
My theory
Nature rewards ancestors by making them dominant, way beyond the percentage of blood, if they were successful in producing offspring of both sexes, who in turn were successful in producing progeny that went on to breed. When siblings come together in a pedigree nature somehow "Knows" that that family was superior and reinforces the type.
I believe that the Y chromosome is instrumental in this process. Note that in both of the greatest stallions in the studbook, the reinforced sibling was on the sireline. This is the advantage that the Y chromosome brings to the equation.

Are you for real Hempy?

You asked is it possible to make a strain stronger through selective breeding, I said yes, you said I was talking shit. Nev then says he has made strains more potent though selective breeding, but you decide to ignore the first bit of his post which mentions this and instead highlight the second part of his post about the y chromosome and ask is anyone going to step up to the plate:D:D:D

Selective reading?

GG

Now Hempy, he is entitled to his opinion.
I have, with selective breeding made things stronger. The question that I have is:- Am I creating something new, or am I digging something up from past ancestors, and if the latter is the case, what role does the Y chromosome play in allowing past ancestors to expess themselves?
N.

IMO you're creating something new. look at dog breeds, their ancestral form is the wolf of today, and yet we have some breeds of dogs that can fit in a tea cup, dogs have never EVER been that small in the natural environment, dogs being wolves from which dogs evolved, there are small foxes but these are not dogs. we also have dogs 2-3 times bigger than an average wolf, irish wolfhounds or great danes, and again dogs/wolves in their natural environment never were that big, even with natural variation in all populations. the reason these breeds exist, is because of directional selection. if you searched through all the genes and their variants in the original wolf population from which dogs evolved there would have been no combination of any genes that would have been able to produce chauwauwah dogs that can fit in your hand when full grown, or irish wolf hound sized dogs as high as a man's shoulders. this is fact. over 100s of years of directional selection humans created these breeds. the way it is done is every time a generation of dogs was created, the breeder took say 10% of the biggest (or smallest dogs) and then breed only those 10% together. initially they would've been only slightly bigger than their parent wolf population average size, nevertheless they were bigger. once the next generation was breed up, again they chose the 10% biggest animals which were again a bit bigger than their parents, who were slightly bigger than the original wolves. this repeated 100s if not 1000s of times, eventually step by step, creates completely new phenotypes effectively. experiments have been done with fish, where they took the biggest and smallest 10% of a population and within only a few generations the average size of each population was HUGE and tiny, compared to the original one they took them from.

i believe this is a good paper on the fish example. sorry for the jargon below but effectively what they're saying is when selecting for bigger fish they increased the average size of them by 7.3% per generation! and visa versa for selecting for smaller fish.

"Single generation up-selection for weight increase yielded -0.4% to 10.9% gain (average gain of 7.3%), and down-selection for weight decrease yielded 8.5% to 16.2% loss at harvest weight. Gain from selection for increase weight was attributed to increased food conversion efficiency. "

http://ressources.ciheam.org/om/pdf/c34/98606195.pdf

another good study from the 80s no less on this subject is - Bondari, K. (1983). Response to bi-directional selection for body weight in channel
catfish. Aquaculture, 33: 73-81.

when you google bidirectional or directional selection papers, there are literally 100s if not 1000s proving this occurs. it's exactly the same thing that has happened in cannabis from day one when the first plant had that beneficial mutation that allowed it to produce THCA that tasted worse to animals than the plants without it. over time the top 10% (for eg,) would've survived better and not been preyed upon by herbivores as much compared to the other 90%, these top 10% would've been left to breed again with themselves, WITHOUT the poorer genes of the other plants that didn't produce the chemical, and each successive generation the potency of the plant would have increased a little, until natural selection tapered off, ie, they would've had enough THCA in their leaves to deter most if not all predators and no longer need to increase levels. then we came along, noticed that these plants could affect us, and did the same sort of selection but artificially which boosted the THCA production in plants even more to higher levels. though we may have finally reached the physical limit of the plant today at 25-30% thc in the final product. anyway i hope that sheds some light on the case.

i don't know enough (nor does anyone currently as far as i'm aware) about the y chromosome(s)s behaviour and role in cannabis to be able to really answer your question. but with all due respect, lack of knowledge or evidence in this case doesn't back up hempy or your arguments, nor can it disprove them. we simply don't know enough about it at the moment to comment. but i'd say the y chromosome has an equal role as any other chromosome, sex- or autosome, in the species. no one wants to remove males from the species, at least i know no one with that express view. to the contrary, the y chromosome will have genes on it the x doesn't obviously and by removing it we would lose some variation/genes from the species gene pool which reduces the species genetic health, even if only slightly. but i believe that feminization has its roles, when done correctly and used properly (not just to make idiots quick money).

for example. say you want to see how your traits in your male translate to how they are expressed in the female progeny you would create when mating it. i think a really good way to do so would be grow a cutting of the male out, next to the same cutting that has been reversed to female (or visa versa, using a female next to a completely reversed cutting made male), you would then be able to evaluate the traits expressed by both the male and female versions of the same cutting and see how they appear in each. ie, if the smell of the female is lemon, how does this translate in the male? does he smell like lemon? or does he exhibit other traits expressed by the same genes that code for lemon scent in the female version? if the female has bright purple flowers and leaves, how does the male express these same genes? by doing this sort of experimenting it will increase our knowledge of expression of genes in males and females and only prove to aid future breeding and selection without breeders having to guess/hope or reverse every plant to be sure, when breeding. feminization will always be a great technique for breeders, but it's definitely not the end all aim, i definitely don't want to see a world where cannabis sativa L. has one sex, nor does anyone else i think.

I think the spelling gave it away i am the real hempy.

And no you and others sed you can turn week shit cannabis into potent quolity cannabis correct read back says just that.

What i sed in short was you can not breed a race horse from a donky rember meaning unless the genetics of that plant is going to give you a good smokeing plant you wont get a good smokeing plant no matter how hard you try it has to be there to begin with.

Y

Hello! Everyone...its me:) I actually thought this thread was over? I was looking all over for this thread yesterday and couldn't find it? Well I found it. I don't want to get into complicated plant theory, but I have to. I have studied, that if a well adapted Y chromosome manages to maintain genetic activity by avoiding mutation accumulation, there is no guarantee it will be passed down to the next generation do to genetic drift. Sex expression is influenced by enviroment, and the sex ratio may vary considerably from one strain to another. Great genes means Great plants, poor enviroment means poor plant growth and expression. Please, no fighting about this Y chromosome, Everything will be the same a 1000 years from now involving this plant, so don't fear, You Will Be Dead!! and someone else will have a different theory I assure you. my two cents. resinbud,;)

The Y chromosome in plants is what sets certain varieties apart as more highly evolved than species which do not have two sexes. My interest in the Y chr. is to understand what role it plays, if any, in breeding superior specimens in whatever I happen to be breeding.
That it plays a major role in mammals is undeniable, if you have studied these things.
With birds, its the female which is XY and the male plumage is on the X chr.
With cannabis, we are selecting for superior females. Some would argue that the Y chr. is irrelevant, you are after an XX plant.
I suppose the question really is, will you still have an XX plant after several generations breeding fems without the use of a male and will the rate of progress be as fast. What about inbreeding depression, when breeding pure lines of fems or are fems just an end product for the consumer. I'm interested in peoples opinions, but uyou are right Resinbud, we shouldn't fight.
I agree largely with what you are saying DB with regard to selective breeding causing change, as long as you are not calling it evolution. Your namesake saw the same thing happening on the Galapagos through natural selection and said that this was evolution.
IMO this is adaptive change, not evolving into something higher. Even the name evolution is deceptive. Evolution is the end result, not the process.

i'm sorry to disagree with you mate but evolution has no end result, evolution has no fixed aim, nothing is any more evolved than anything else, evolution is simply "change" whether to more advanced or more primitive states of existence, there is no such thing as something that has evolved more than something else. the only way for that to ever be true would be if you froze time for all species but one and allowed it to continue to evolve, when you unfroze the other species you could argue that that one species had evolved further (longer in time) than the others. adaptive change is evolution, they are one in the same.

"Evolution is the change in inherited traits of a population of organisms through successive generations." - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evolution

whether they're changes to increase or decrease complexity is irrelevant, change is continuous.

with respect, i think you're under the impression that evolution requires constant advancement of a species, and would call a species that evolves into something more primitive as if it were "de-evolving" however this isn't a word, evolution is like time, it's a constant forward moving process you can't go backwards. things change in whatever way they need to in order to best survive the conditions they exist in, if conditions are complex often this creates complex organisms to deal with this, if they become more simple over time, organisms no longer need to be complex and can evolve into more simple creatures, this is still forward moving evolution, they're changing to the new environments in which they find themselves.

an easy way to think about it is that evolution is total distance traveled, not displacement. if you move 100kms in one direction, and then 100kms in the opposite direction you are in the same place you started, you're displacement is 0, but your distance traveled is 200kms. the end result is that you haven't moved anywhere, however you really did move 200kms, the distance you traveled through time is an analogy to evolution. it has no purpose, there is no end result or aim, i hope you get what i mean?

complexity evolving into more simple structures for example - horses once had feet with multiple toes (much like pigs, sheep), now they have only one big toe, birds and reptiles like turtles once had many teeth in their jaws and now only have beaks, snakes evolved from an animal that was effectively a goanna, its legs reduced into nothing as it survived better in its environment without them. that was still forward moving evolution.

back to cannabis. cannabis females still carry male chromosomes, it's not as easy as defining it as XY and XX like in humans. the reason females throw male flowers is because they have y (or male) chromosomes in their genome which allow them to make the male flowers. pure females which have no male chromosomes have no way of making male flowers and thus can't be feminized. so we'll never lose the male chromosomes completely even if we did turn cannabis into an entirely female population, for it to continue to reproduce it will always need those male chromosomes in its genome to make those male flowers etc. if we lost the male genome completely, cannabis would be extinct by definition as the females would only be able to reproduce asexually (cloning), sexual reproduction would come to a standstill.

I Love Males!!! Haaaayyyyy!!!

After reading in the book MarijuanaBotany by RC Clarke many people were exchanging this idea. It sounds like a good theory that the plant exudes resin to protect it from UV. This is horseshit IMO. I have tried for several runs trying to incorporate UV throughout different periods in the plants growth/flower cycle and it made no difference in resin production. Sorry Namaskar, BS theory.

IMO the single biggest environmental factor which has an almost direct corolation with resin production is HUMIDITY. IMO plants with tightly spaced resin glands are able to slow down the rate of evaporation by creating a microclimate just above he plants surface with resin. The resin diffuses light particles and acts like a dome does over your cuts. KB :)_~

Stoner -Gate: Admit nothing, Deny Everything!

Hi Englishrick,
Ive always thought you had an interesting posting style, which Ive always took as an attempt to cover up your syntax. Perhaps not a bad idea, considering the nature of these forums? The only reason I bring this up is because in the past, certain posters have attempted to foil similar discussions by the use of fake alias's and such, such as British Hempires role in Stoner-Gate. Which is a term coined to describe a situation that happened at Icmag where troll handles were, and are, being used in an attempt to stiffle legitimate discussion on the topic of the dangers the feminized seed trend presents to the overall cannabis pool.
Hi all,
I feel this thread has gotten off-topic once again, and its funny how the same members are always involved in such practices both here at Icmag and MNS. What a coincidence? I had been wondering for some time now where the rest of the culprits from Icmag were, then it dawned on me, perhaps they are already here?

I found the post below quite interesting, considering the similarities in post demonstrated later.

Its interesting that you mention split personalities Kopite, because Ive found the similarities between your post, especially the syntax, (the study of principles and rules for constructing sentences), to parallel quite nicely with those of another poster who also shares the same kind of general attitude on these forums as yourself. Along with that sweet heart attitude you share in common, an underlying interest in the feminized seed threads, the same group of cats you seem to run with, and Hoosierdaddy's recent banishment at Icmag and your sudden re-emergence on this forum, Ive found this all to be quite the coincidence to say the least.

I found the striking similarity in writing styles, syntax, use of Ellipses, choice of words, subject matter and overall poor attitude one heck of a coincidence Kopite, or is that hoosierdaddy? ;) Together this all seems like too much of a coincidence to overlook, especially in light of previous scenarios in these same threads at Icmag (Stoner-Gate).

There is one thing good that will come of all of this Kopite/Hoosierdaddy, the forum has been given an oppurtunity to see first hand what Stoner-Gate truly is. And that there are those within the cannabis community who will do anything, and everything, to keep the truth about Feminized Seeds as far away from prying eyes as possible. Repeatidly taking the thread subject matter off topic, the use of troll handles and the reliance of your friends (Darwin) to help you along in this process all in an effort to stiffle the truth from getting out to the general public that the currently popular trend of Feminized Seed is little more than a scam designed to take peoples money, and offer them an inferior product all under the pretence of getting an all female crop, skipping over the hard work of selection in the hope of chasing the Sensimilla dream.

The funny thing is that most of you are totally freaked out about feminizing seeds , but totally not concerned about the autoflowers which has become dominant on the cannabis market. Most of you are growing indoors and perhaps want to keep cuttings from your favourite pheno's you have found.Imagine you find a very good pheno and it starts to flower even under 24/0 of light.Infected with autoflower traits.Think about that.

Bad breeding practices is already dominating for a long time the Cannabis market, but you can't compare oranges with apples and that counts also for companies who are dealing with fem seeds. You can't compare Simon(AK-47 strain) with the Greenhouse guys. That would be unfair.

XX Chromosomes

Hello! Nevil, and friends....:) I was on here earlier just typing away about what I know, and lost all that was written. I am back and hope I can write it in more Succinct format. Nevil, If you really want to split the Chromosome into two parts, you can do this with chemicals. I like the way you think Nevil, and let me tell the community why. If Nevil can pull this off, it will be one of his greatest accomplishments ever, and let me tell you why while very high on MW. If you doubled the chromosomes you could double the yield, and would mean NH,MW,MH,SSH would be able to double the yield from a typical grow with these genes. The doubling of chromosomes will result in a much higher cell activity, and better adaptations within the enviroment planted. I would like to try again and explain this very possible quest as follows. Picture 7 Circles alighned on a straight line, but the straight line curves like a bad back, and then back to a straight line again explains the process. This process goes from A to G, and here goes while Im high:D At the top of the straight line you have Two Circles. (A) the {Cultivar} across from distantly related, (B) {Cultivar} Then go straight to the middle of line that is getting crooked, (C)and is F1 infertile. At this level of chromosome add the chemical COLCHICINE treatment. After treatement at level (D), the chromosome X devides into two separate chromosomes XX. (E) Then you would back cross with the cultivar that were selected for the desired traits. (F) At this level of the chromosome the curvature is severe at this stage when you back cross the {Cultivar}. (G) This is the end of the process and you end up with progency with the desired traits, and then the chromosome will be as you had wished, and back to Neutral on the line as you have found your desired traits. You can also do this with a tissue culture. Nevil, the first thing you need is a Flowcytometer which determines the relative DNA-level in each cell nucleus. I hope this makes sense on what this could do for the WORLD of Cannabis, and could be on a total other level for the professional grower or hobbiest. I hope this all makes sense. Sincerely, resinbud;)

you're definitely right to doubling yield and being more adaptive to environmental change, most weeds are polyploidy (have more than 1 set of their chromosomes doubled/tripled or more through mutation), this has occurred with a huge amount of our crops like corn, wheat, bananas etc so that the fruit or grain the plant yields is a lot more per plant than it was previously, the reason for this is because the plant has more than 1 set of chromosomes, it thus has more than 1 set of the genes that regulate the amount of fruit/grain production, so relative to the amount of chromosome sets the yield increase (ie, tetraploid (2 x normal diploid plant) gives 2 times the yield). however from what i know colchicine experiments with cannabis have lead no where, i was researching this a while back, and it was pretty rare for any plant to be treated with this dangerous chemical properly and survive etc, and i definitely wouldn't be smoking or consuming in anyway the resulting buds... this chemical is carcinogenic to humans (it induces mutations in plants just by touching them, it does the same to humans). i also believe that even if a plant were successfully treated with colchicine, it is most unlikely that this change in chromosome number is heritable, ie. it can't pass it on to its progeny as meiosis just divides down the chromosome number to haploid (single) per gamete. the best way i can think of to do it would to be lucky enough to stumble upon a natural polyploid plant and then attempt to breed with it. if it could ever be done though it would be pretty interesting to see what would happen to the cannabis breeding community.

Feminized Fanboys

WTF is going on here??? I envision a team of assholes sitting in their room getting paid to de-semen-ate a bunch of horse and bull shit to rip our plant apart from its core.
