Bad news!

So I went to check on my plants and found some male flowers. All of the ortegas except for the #9 and#10 had at least one male flower. The number 6 and 7 were by far the worst but only had maybe a dozen. 2 or 3 clusters and the occasional single or double. It took a few hours but I went thru my entore room and plucked them all.

I did notice that they only appeared on the lower portion of the plant. Their were no male flowers at the top 10-14 inches. I already had trimmed roughly 1/3 of the lower branches and now closer to half if not a little more on some of them. I only found one potential seed forming. Alot of the male flowers were wide open and obviously let some pollen fly over the last 3-4 days.

Over the next few days I will see if seeds start to form. My hope of course is that they do not and that the pollen is not viable. I know wishful thinking but I got to stay positive right?

I just fed the plants for the first time the other day. It was a quarter dosage of budswell. Since most of the plants are at diff. Flowering times I thought I would experiment to see how they react to feeding and when. This may or may not be the cause. It has also been extremely hot in my area. The temp in my grow room has not reached above 90. I do not beleive that I have any light leaks but I could be wrong. Im not ruling anything out yet.

I am building a new room that should be finished in the next week or two. Most of the second round will be flowered in there under a 600w hps.

I guess sometimes you get thrown a curve and have to take a step back and re-evaluate what your doing.

Very upsetting :( My whole room got pollinated by a lower branch of some dickhead bagseed mexican indica hermy motherfucker, I didn't catch it til about 6 weeks in cause the room was so full :( It pretty much destroyed 6 females surrounding it, they completely stopped forming buds and have massive seed clusters now. Worst part is I'll have to rerun the other females again to see what they're really capable of without being pollinated. :( You live, you learn :( I hope your situation turns out better than mine.

Ouchie that bites. I think I'm lucky so far because I can't find any seeds forming. Based on the other Ortega thread it seems that mine are going a little slower. I'll go into more detail with pics in a few days but I am pretty sure it was heat that caused this. I pm'd shanti to see if any type of stress caused ortega to hermie more than others. Over the few weeks I'll be watching them all carefully.
H&C. It's far from over. The top 12 inches of the plants were unaffected. As of now the yield is of course going to lower but I'm not worried. The lower branches had only tiny popcorn like buds. If you could even call them that. I am continuing to flower them out.

I've decided to take a break from the madness of work and the stress from these plants and go fishing. Wish me luck!

FISH ON!

It appears as though another grower, Medicine Man, had an issue with male flowers appearing on a couple of his female Ortega's. I have high expectations for this strain and hope that this won't become a pressing issue. Please keep us updated.

Sensi13 As soon as I hear a response you will be the first to know. I gotta help a fellow Northwesterner out!

I do think that this issue is a heat or nute related issue. I can also understand the IBL factor involved as mentioned on medicine mans thread. I am happy and sad to know that it happened to another. I def. questioned my own growing skills because of this. At the very least I have learned something and that is key.

beancracker if you keep a close eye on your plants whether ortega or not hermies do not have to be an issue. Especially if there are not that many. You can still harvest good weed. I just looked and no seeds are forming.

Kingkill this has been a terrible year for fishing in my neck of the woods. They are actually closing fisheries because the lack of fish. I wish they would do more maybe make it catch and release with no commercial.

So these first two shots are of the 2nd round ortegas.

This is the O5 at 25 inches

O7 2nd round at 24 inch

First round O7 male flower

and another

There are no seeds forming as of today. I think I got to them all in time.

Nl6 31 inches no vigor growing slow!

NL4 49 inches and was bent heavily. This is a BEAST! I actually like this one although not at all what I expected this one is looking better than the others.

O1 8-24 39 inch

O2 8-24 37 inch

O5 8-24

O6 8-24 38 inch

O7 38 inch

I know the pics are small next time I will use a better camera.

The number 9 and 10 are my new favorites. The O9 has very tight nodes compared to all others and its starting to look closer to the O10. All the other plants are pretty similiar in structure except those 2. The 10 is by far the tallest and it looks like it could yield well. The buds are getting DENSE compared the other ortegas. The others actually look a little fluffy. Since these pics were taken they seem to filling in. O10 also has a 'classic' look to it. I will be more detailed with photos next week. It has more finger leaves than any other. The crystals are forming all down the sunleaves. Not many but further than the others. This one could go be a longer flower time as well.

Last week I pulled the nl5. Yesterday I pulled O7 and O2. The O2 was on the earlier side of being done. Next round I'll let it go longer. I was surprised to see it that far along. Trichs were about 10-15% amber. Round 2 O7 hermed. I tossed all clones. The buds of all 3 mentioned above seemed a little wispy.

O10 and O1 are going strong. Much more dense than others. I could have cut O1 but I'm going to let it go a little longer. O10 needs a week or two it's very slow. O6 is also looking nice. Later today I'll start round 2 on nl4 and O1. I'll be a on holiday for the next 12 days so when I get back I'll post a bunch of pics and I'll have an early smoke report.

hi resinfinger

nice thread you have there, to bad for the hermi,
Were the male flowers growing from the colas or from an axillary shoot ?

bonbolos

BB there was only one on the main cola. All but that one was on lower half of plant. Only a few had more than one sac. Those were all growing from out of/with female flowers. The pics a post or two before are probably what 95% of the locations of the herm.

Sensi13 I'd like to know that from BB as well. BTW no word from the man yet. Feel free to ask ?'s when you get yours going. I'd flower early as it's appearing they stretch (2-2.5 times veg height) that's under 2 diff watt light 600 and 1000. In my 600 the light was real close and burned one top slightly.

hi all

I believe that the position varies according to the genetical determinism :

when I was younger I grown some seeds from a bag of african weed (we've got some often in france)
I had male development and female development on same plants, but it was clear that all males came from some specific shoots and same for females. the two type of flowers developed early in the flowering period.
it was clear that the plants were monoique specimens in a dioique population. The sexual differentiation was done very early in the plant's life because she had strong monoique traits.
these varieties haven't been bred to take off this tendency

A few month ago, I tried fem seeds to check what was said about these, I tried a few varietes from different growers to compare quality, I happened to have some hermis in 2 varieties,
The male flower developped very late during ripening and developped into female colas, therefore coming from a sexually differenciated meristem, it was clear that you could call that hermi and not monoique.
for me this is due to environment that trigger clusters of recessive allelles working in synergie and provoking the development of male flowers. this is common is fem seeds because there is more inbreeding therefore more homozygosity for all the recessive alleles like this.

this may happen with regular varieties if there has been half-sibblings crosses and or backcrosses during cultivar's selection.

I hope this is comprehensible

cheers

Hi Resin,
Dont worry about not having the necassary skills to grow a plant properly initially, this is something that I initially struggled with myself many years ago. Hopefully you get your feeding schedule and grow room environmental factors under control in the near future, as I think we are all looking forward to more grows of this nature from you in the future. :)

Keep 'em coming Chief.

If you have been reading my post rather than scouring for quotes you can use against me. You would know that I have put some of the ortegas and NL's into another more controlled room and the same thing happened with the same plants. Plants that did not have it occur in round 1 have also not had it happen in round 2. This leads me to believe that it more than likely is not nute or heat related.

Questioning ones skills is something everyone should do. You will never learn if you dont try new methods or listen to others ideas.

Making a statement on one thread (obviously not liking my statement about double posting) and 15 minutes later coming over here with a condensending attitude I think is below the level of MNS members. I normally dont have a problem with your posts but lets be civil and not act like children with to much time on there hands.

Hi Resin,
There is nothing to be upset over my friend, these things take time. I was certainly not scouring your post looking for something to use against you lol, as you will recall I had previously posted in your thread, quite impressed with what you've did in here thus far.

http://www.mrnice.nl/forum/showpost.php?p=53923&postcount=35

So no need to be defensive brother, we're all friends here and learn together. :) A shame your other grow room had issues as well, I wonder if others growing this line are experiencing stress/herm/intersex related issues as well?

Looking forward to future updates :)
