On 4-27 I sprouted 1 pack of Sensi's NL. Within 2 days they were all about 1/8 to 1/4 long. I planted them in my soil mix (see below) and within 3 days they were all above ground.

Today I started to soak my 10 Ortega beans. I am unable to start 20 seedlings at the same time due to space. I am hoping to pick the best NL in late veg and stall those so that they can be side by side with the Ortega. Its still early and theres alot of factors invloved.

All of the plants will be treated the same. There might be restrictions but we will get to those if they arise. All of the females from both strains will be flowered. Some might be more cloned then others. I have a perpetual grow system that I use. I will probably save more Ortega males for breeding and maybe 1 or 2 NL. In the past I have typically found one plant in each pack of seeds that I like and the rest are culled after 2 grows. The keepers stay in rotation for awhile and they help me determine what strain I will grow next.

Lighting
T5 early veg
400 MH veg
600 HPS preflower (Depends on space, capacity, and height)
1000 HPS flower (might go directly to 12/12)

Soil is a mix of sunshine#4,earthworm,guano,chicken manure,mushroom compost,foxfarm soil,vermiculite,perlite and lime

With that soil mixture I usually dont have to give any additional fertilizer. I grow by "listening to my plants". The fert if used is budswell and or tigerbloom. None in veg unless issues arise.

The main goal is the finished product and that they are all grown to the best of my ability so that this test is FAIR.

Feel free to ask questions just remember to be respectful.

Ha

Haha first seat. GL with Ortega. I am interested in this as a med strain. Will definatly be watching. Hope they both turn out well for you RF....peace..Ns

Lookin forward to this, finger. :D

BTW, if they are all getting treated the same, if you accidentially tip one over, you have to tip the rest over :p Lol, yust yankin your bobber :D

This photo is of 2 of the NL's, #1 the taller and #8. I have culled these two for slow growth and mutations.

This picture is just a tip if when handling seeds that are sprouting. A pen cap works well for handling them and placing them in soil once they have sprouted in paper towels. Careful not to fling them across the room. I have done that before.

All 10 of the Ortegas have been placed in soil within 36 hours of placing them in between paper towels.

a ?

Hey RF,

With your soil mix you do. Do you put the seed direct into that? or do something else with them?..Ns

Noshow
I place them in papertowels until I see the root sticking out then I place in that soil.

That there #9 is a funky like seedling. I was going to get the Ortega but opted for the afghan skunk. I will be watching this one because i have a feeling i should have gotten both.

bugs and mutations

So as of today the NL's are doing alright. There are a few with nutrient problems. Not bad and they are under control. I dont think they are liking my soil mixture. I will be putting them in larger pots over the next week. They are on there 4-6th node depending on the plant. Some are a little lanky and tall the others short and squat. Just the variation I would expect to see from a F-1 hybrid as listed on the box. The leaves are all pretty similiar.
The ortegas had a small infestation of small white bugs. Not too many but enough for me to want and need to react quickly. As you should with the first sign of any infestation. Also clean everything ASAP because the cleaner it is the better. That has occured over the last 6 days. They seem to be gone now. All of the Ortegas look exactly the same except for the lovely trifoiliate (my spelling sucks so look at earlier posts if that doesnt make sense).

So far I have had 100% germ rate on both of the strains. Besides the nutrient and bug problems (user error) noth are living up to "what the box says".

And by the Patrickstar I will not be infesting my NL's with the bugs, nor will I give an OD of nutes to the ortegas.LOL!!!

Looks like Sensi's germination problems may be a thing of the past?

I did have the Pack for about 8 months as well. I received the Ortegas no more than a month ago.

NL transplant day

Today I transplanted all of the NL's from there 16oz keg cups to 1 gallons. They all had vigorous root growth in there 1st 3 weeks. I should have actually done this a week earlier. The nutrient problems I was having with them were probably due to that.
The ortegas are on the 2nd or 3rd leaf set. I will have photos next week of both of them. Veg photos can be boring.

Hope this answers your question

This is from the thread "shanti will you reveal....Ortega"

HI all

well Ortega was based on work from Neville and was a selection of an afghan which was also known Northern Lights 1. It was then consumed under the Sensi seeds label when Neville sold it.Breeder Steve made a selection of his version and it was a good plant.

I am using the old seed from 1987 of Nev, not a big selection came up but was a quality strain and full of excellent stable phenotypes. It is not an F1 seed but an inbreed line and after the selection work parts of it are being used in other hybrids and research work.

It tends to flower bwteen 6-8 weeks at 12/12, and enjoys a strong feeding regime. Unlike the large colas of flower clusters it produces flowers up the stem of medium size but density is on its side.

More in the medicinal range of plants for those with muscular tension disorders and for those who need to stimulate appetite and sleep...as far as i am concerned. But we can add to it everybody who does a thread to get a better over view....hope that helps a little Sb

Ortega transplant and NL 18/6

Yesterday and today I transplanted the Ortegas. They are all growing very similiar in height and over all look with the exception of a couple.

This is the typical root mass on the Ortegas.

Ortega #7 had a hard time finding which way is up.

Ortega #3 was slightly burned, I think it hit a hotspot in the soil, no nutes have been given to date to any NL's or Ortega's.

Ortega #4 is a standout because of the leaves. They are much rounder than any of the others.

7 of the 8 remaining NL's were placed under a 400w MH running 18/6 on light sched.

NL #6 shortest on left and #2 on right tallest

NL #4 6 and 7.

NL #10 already declared female. It was heavily stressed with a magnesium problem and is still recovering.
