germinating mns

so i am trying to germinate some afghan haze...i first put them in some water with temp of 80*F until a they sink then put them in some soil with lots of perlite in the grow room about 87*F with black panda film over the top (this usually gets me a 80-100% germination ratio) so far i have put 8 seeds in soil 48+ hours ago...none have popped up out of the soil...any reccomendations?
I am about to lay the rest of the seeds down to see what happens...

hi catalyst

your method sounds fine , if the seeds are good they should germ fine , some may take a little longer that 48hrs , wait a bit longer, give em at least 4-6days , some seeds can take longer than other.

how long did you soak the seeds for and how deep were they planted/buried?

good luck with the germination

Here's my advice (FWIW)

wait a little longer. 48 hours is not long enough. Seeds can pop nice and quickly but can take up to 2 weeks to sprout. I generally discard after about 10 days.

Also - make sure they are not in the water for longer than a few hours (overnight is the maximum) as it is possible to harm seeds if you leave them in the water too long.

Generally speaking it sounds like your method is spot on, just wait a while longer.

Good Luck

Grover is right, patience is a virtue when you're germinating. I had several instances where I'd give up on an unsprouted seed, put another down in its place, then have 2 sprouts in one pot a week later. If you want to be more sure as to their progress, you can take a small spoon and very delicately dig one of them for a sec out to see if it cracked and made a tail....my guess is that you'll find a growing seedling that hasnt come to the surface yet.

Hi All

well I do not think that seeds pop their heads out of the soil in 2 days. But it depends on the depth you buried them and the temperature of the soil. I would allow at least a week to 10 days and would be very surprised if you do not get all 8 pop, since they are very fresh seed. Let us know how it goes all the bestSb

so I gently removed some soil from the 8 initial sees to check there progress. One had a tail that turned brown :(
two of them had no tail and had no sign of a crack...two had a slight tail but some didnt look promising and three were working on a nice tail ready to head for the air :D
...so i laid the rest of 10 seeds down today...I must have done something wrong with the initial 8 seeds, operator error..lol so is life i am still really excited to finally get my hands on a mr nice haze variety after having my past orders not come thru....I am having to stop myself from daydreaming of ideas for this grow at work...lol

thanks for all your input...i think i will like it here.

my master kaze (afghan haze daddy) germinated 100%, but it took just over 10 days for the longest one.

iirc, the fastest was 3.5 days, most around 5 days to pop above the soil

well i layed some other strains down with the initial 8 afghan haze...3 mazar i sharifs (freebies from gn) two have popped out of the soil. 2 bodhi sativas from rm 1 has popped out of soil. there are 2 afghan hazes that i can see the seed popping out. From the 10 afghan hazes i later laid down two has already popped out of the soil :)...less than 48 hours...i am not giving up on any of them yet

the lastest ones i laid down are coming up faster then the first eight i laid down  (i dont really know what i did wrong with the first 8 maybe too high temp? too soggy soil??? not enough humidity??) i cant wait to start a grow report on these afghan hazes!!! looking to cross an afghan haze with a mazar i sharif. Anyone grow any mazar i sharifs out????

i had some problems myself with a different strain recently but it is rather unusual at the MNS company to recieve bad results. Often its the rarity and not the norm as with other companies...glad to see you got everything worked out, SBD

ya...i chalk this up to operator error. as long as i get more then 50% i will be happy i guess. I just want to get a feel of what the phenos and genetics are capable of.

There's so many varibles involved with seeds.

How old is the stock?

What time of year are the seeds being sent?

What conditions are the seeds subjected to in the mail?

Typically these are the real problems with seeds that dont germinate. If the stock is old the germination rates suffer. If you buy the seeds in the dead middle of summer or winter the temperatures can kill them.

I got some super fresh stock of (g13xhashplant)x45, I got 100% germination from 50 seeds and on top of that most sprouted by 48 hours the last ones coming in at day 4. I never seen that before ever.

I'll be germinating some Shit and Spice in the next weeks and let you know how that works out. Personally I make a real nice soil, get it moist, then poke a tip of a pen in, and drop the seeds in. I then keep the top of the soil moist until all pop out.

another one of the later ten afghan haze pooped out of soil. still waiting for a lot of them to come up though...keeping my fingers crossed.

so far i have a germination rate of 4 out of 18  this kind of germination rate has never happened to me...it is really depressing:(

be patient

Don't stress out too much...it has only been 2-3 days since you started the thread. Sometimes seeds take up to 5-6 days or longer to germinate, depending on the genetics and the environment. Just keep the soil moist (but not soggy) and wait, and I'm sure they'll pop up.

its been a week since i put the first seeds down...before i started this thread. The ones that popped are the ones i laid down a few days ago...i am not stressing out just wondering what i did wrong.....

Depends on your method of doing it im not a believer of the glass of water way.

Acidrain's Germination Technic:

4 squares piece's of kitchen roll.

Place 2 of the 4 piece's in the sink put the seeds on top, place the other to piece's on top and pour glass of water over it all.

Fold up the kitchen roll into a nice sqaure you can squeeze it abit to drain some water out if it a little sloopy.

Place it into a electric propagator keep it heated at 85 - 90f.

Leave for 2days, within 24h you will notice the little white root showing 2nd day they will be done.

disinfecting seeds

the old germ. instructions from H. S. was to use a 5-10% bleach solution for a few minutes because the seed coat of most seeds are inhabited by microorganisms which could be detrimental to the first days of the sprout (such as the damping-off fungus)

sometimes also, I will moisten and sterilize the soil (by baking)....spreading 1 or 2 inches as a top layer in the pot after cooling (for me, I'm not worried about all the beneficials I killed since the fertilizer "values" for the plants are still in the soil and later the beneficials will recolonize it anyway)

After cooling of the soil then Michorizae (sp?) fungi may be added as this product should be highly quality controlled and not contain any damping-off pathogens
