Northern lights#1 vs. northern lights #5

The Cuban black haze sure has an NL5 structure to the plant.

@swampthing I’d love to see the coastal nl2 X g13HP grown side by side with either the masterkush skunk or the g13 X Afghan skunk. Masterkush descends from Hindu Kush which descends from nl2, and if that’s not to your liking growing the 25% g13 from coastal against the 50% g13 (X Afghan skunk) would be equally interesting! Both can be had at the auction for a deal, although the masterkush skunk is probably easier to hit for the low low.

Hey Dioecious, how is your day going?

Perhaps I misunderstood your post, but I am curious to hear where you read that Hindu Kush is bred from NL#2. The original Masterkush is bred from two different Hindu Kush plants, but Hindu Kush itself is not descended from Northern Lights, if anything it is the reverse. Pure Hindu Kush are various landrace chemovars collected from the Hindu Kush mountain ranges.

Hey! My day is a night, but it’s peachy, living the dream :). I hope you read this on a good day/night!

It may take a second for me to find it, but Nevil absolutely said that his initial Hindu Kush was nl2 X kush4, and that they both had the same smell, that of juniper, so he put them together.

I’d love to know what the other hindu was in masterkush.

Edit:

“The NL2 was IMO a NL version of Kush. More weight and that puffed up indica type of bud that NL5 had. The taste was very similar to the Kush4 that I remember as coming from Ortega. (correct me if I'm wrong Jim). The Ortega type was more what I would describe as a typical landrace although fairly consistent. I used an F4 NL2 male over the Kush4 to produce a vigorous hybrid that was true to type. It was the Kush4 that made me realise that the NL2 was primarily a Kush. The NL2 needed some fresh blood as the F5 wasn't as good as the F4. I had planned to take the Hybrid back to NL2 and as the NL2 had already been released I expected others would do the same. I must be living in my own world as it doesn't appear that anyone saw the connection that seemed obvious to me.”

This isn’t what I was referring to, and it’s ambiguous what he meant. Marty/originstkog definitely told me Nevil confirmed that Hindu Kush in 91/92 was kush 4 and nl2, to my eyes the similarities of triangle kush and nl5 were undeniable. The linkage was to nl2. I’ve seen kush4 in Canadian menus, and I believe dogless/Jim Ortega lives… I don’t know much about it, but the nl2 doesn’t seem to have enough magic on its own to explain tk and og. I’ll try to find a Nevil quote that is more specific bc it think it’s said elsewhere.

Triangle kush, (ghost) OG, and bubba kush are all deeply influenced by the nl2/kush4 ancestry, and SFV Larry etc more or less reflect some ancestor shared by nl2 and kush4, back in the old world. :)

Does this help?

Nevil said
Kush 4, I crossed with NL2(which had the same Kush smell) and this Kush Hybrid is the foundation of todays Kush lines.

He also said
this which may be helpful
When I first got the NL varieties, there were 8 types, 1-8.
They came with descriptions, which I published in my catalogue. These descriptions may not correlate with what later developed. The original intention was to purchase seeds from the US NL growers. It didn't work out and supply dried up. I kept the lines separate and inbred them. NL1 and NL2 stabilised into distinct types and NL5 only produced one unique individual.
NL1 was a full blood Afghan indica. One thick main stem, dark green leaves, modest yield with nuggety buds, a little coarse with good resin production, which when ripe went golden. The high was narcotic. The seeds ranged from tiny to massive. I used to love the big ones. Large fat heavily and darkly mottled seeds. Selecting for these seeds made this Afghan even coarser. It was fun to show people these seeds.
The best line of NL1 actually came from the smaller seeded types, better high and bud structure.
There weren't many pure indica lines around in those days. Big Bud, Hash Plant and G13 were pure indicas in my estimation, but were cuttings. NL1 was the only good pure Afghani male line I had.( there was Sams Afghani#1, but that was toxic in a bad way) The NL2 was a Kush.
I put the NL1 out there as a pure strain. I wasn't popular. People would tell me, "give me the pure strains", but if it cost them 10% of their yield they would complain, well try 50%.
The pure indica hybrids were more popular. NL1 x HP and NL1 x G13 were the best. At least people could use the word pure (very popular). But they were good!

I expect that a lot of people holding what they believe to be pure indicas today, would find, if the truth be known, that the sire line traces back to NL1.

Very cool quotes. Nevil is probably spot on about the kush archetype with certain original northern light chemovars. The pure landrace Hindu Kush was most likely used to breed northern lights.
I can see how one would mistakenly think that hindu kush was bred from NL, however it is the other way around.

If NL2 was a kush type, and selected to make the seeds called “Hindu kush”, then the northern lights line came from plants from the Hindu Kush region, and that’s why Nevil used NL2 in his seed offering. So Hindu Kush both comes from *and* created northern lights, depending on how you define “Hindu kush.”

Hindu kush is a landrace. It is possible that nevil saw hindu kush heritage in his northen lights plant and sold it as such, but real hindu kush is a landrace that has been grown for millenia in the isolated Hindu kush mountain ranges. Nl is a hybrid created much more recently than that. On top of that you yourself correctly said that Masterkush is bred feom two different hindu kush plants. If nevil did create hindu kush, as you mistakingly believe, than why are there two types?

Believe what you like my friend. May Happy and high days be ahead for you.

@Diesels840

So you are saying that you think Nevil was just selling imported seed and lied and didn’t breed his Hindu Kush offering, which changed the world?

Nevil did not breed hindu kush. YOU said he bred it when he didn't, Hindu kush is a LANDRACE. All hybrids are bred from landraces or other hybrids. All Northern Lights cultivars are hybrids. I have no more energy to spend on this converation with you. If you choose to stick to your opinion, however easy it is to verify as incorrect, then that is your right as a fellow human being.

Nope, still puffing on some Blue Dream, just not wasting more energy. I'd rather not clog up this thread with useless back and forths.

Well, I have to assume we have a dialect issue here, but for the vast majority of Americans, when they say “Hindu Kush” in reference to cannabis, they are referring to plants that were produced from seeds sold from the cannabis castle. Those seeds were kush4 (a named female plant) pollinated with a male from the nl2 lineage, by a man named Nevil. I can see why you object to his naming of a seed offering with a landrace, but in botany we don’t just identify by landrace but by collection data so in my experience anyone who has landrace kush does better to identify it’s origin than a vague mountain range than spans several countries. If anyone tried to sell me “landrace hindu kush” seeds without collection data they’d not convince me that they were not just selling seeds descended from Nevil offerings.

The Kush4 x NL2 Nevil created was called Kush x Kush, which was later renamed Hindu Kush by Sensi seeds.

NL2 was an Afghani x (Afghani/Thai) which Nevil later bred towards the Afghan side (Hindu Kush).
