G13 Widow, Amoril's return to the grow

Time to knock some rust off, I haven't been able to grow for a while now. Thought it would be fun to start with some old school G13 Widow. This is not the new test offering, but it should be fun to run at the same time

So heres a pack of g13 Widow. 19 beans total, thanks Shanti and J, good on you!

24 hours of soaking in water treated with a drop of superthrive, we have 19/19 sunk and 11 or 12 of them already have visible taproot. Got them in dirt, and now we wait

Nice one, going to tag along here!

I also just germed 11 G13xSkunk (the old version) since my testers arrived a few days too late.

All 11 germinated quick and reliable as always. In comparison, 3 strains from 2 other breeders were popped alongside the G13xSkunk and even though they germed fine as well, none of them were 100% and as quick as the MRN seeds. This is congruent with my past observations: MRN seeds germinate better than the rest on average. Have not had a bad germ rate with MRN seeds to date (while I have with others) and I have popped far more seeds from MRN than anyone else so far.

Anyway, as of now, 8 or 9 of the G13xSkunk are above ground, waiting for the other 2 or 3 but I am afraid one of them won't make it as the tap-root was slightly damaged when I pulled the seedling out of the moist paper towel it germed in. Bummer.

Wish you good luck and success with this round, maybe we can compare the G13xSkunk and G13xWidow with the new testers the other blokes are growing at the moment.

Hey Broseidon, thanks for tagging in. I've seen a few of your previous grows while catching up, always good stuff. One thing though, why paper towel your seeds? I soak mine then go straight to dirt. If you expect the seeds will germinate, just let them do their thing. Adding steps just risks messing it up, like a taproot sticking to a towel lol. That's some sage advice from SB a decade ago or so, and it hasnt failed me yet. What will germ, will germ.

----

As has been noted, Mr Nice has incredible germ rates. This is no exception. We're 4-5 days removed from initial soak, and 12/19 have already made an appearance above dirt. Giggity

Just had the best success with the paper towels so far.

Have tried soaking in water and straight into soil as well.

I preferred the paper towel method. Have used it several times already and have had 100% success with it before (with MRN strains anyway).

It just worked the best for me and also affords me to not set up more jify plugs, trays, etc. than I actually need.

What convinced me of the paper towel method was actually ma run with 50 Critical Mass beans.

I germed those in paper towels and I was experiencing some technical difficulties and had to keep them in the paper towels for a good week.

Was really worried when I finally opened them up, expecting to just have wasted 50 great seeds...

To my surprise, they had just grown. No leaf development yet, obviously, but the tap roots were like 5cm and more.

Now the drawback of me taking too long to put them in soil was that the taproots were all intertwined. Had grown around and attached to each other.

We all know one is not supposed to even touch the tap root if it can be avoided (which I believe is one of the arguments against this method) but what did I have to loose?
So I went and seperated 50 seedlings from each other and the paper towel. I had to pull quite a bit with some and was sure I had injured at least a few of the tap roots.

100% above ground a day (not even) later.

Just didn't have that success with soaking in water overnight/48 hrs and then straight into soil.

My theory is that in soil, the seed can either be not encased/enveloped by all sides with moisture, due to air pockets, or the soil can be too compact/packed and the seed can have trouble pushing through.
Neither can happen in paper towels, which is why I like it (and the possibility to see what is going on with the seed without having to disturb it by digging it up).

I'm doing terrible with updates. Of the 15 seeds I purchased, 17 germinated with 2 duds (both were visibly damaged so I had doubts). Any way you shake that, I'm ahead

Plants are doing well. Had them under 24hrs of light for a few weeks, have recently started to add some darkness. Hoping to have a few showing gender in a week or so

These pics are 4 or 5 days old, so the growth is more substantial, but it's what I have at the moment. I'll update in a day or two with current pictures

This is just a group shot and a photo of my early favorite, because we have to fawn over something

Hey Amoril,

Looking very good so far man. Nice job shaking the dust off the ol Green Thumb!

I look forward to watching how these turn out for you. Best of luck!

Thanks Jake! It IS great growing again, as I ease back into it, my mind is blown that I was able to quit when I did. Lifes weird sometimes

Heres a couple of pics from last night, so at least they're current. Just another group shot and a close up of the same plant as before

Another small update. Since I'm re-establishing my grow, I'm getting supplies as I need them. Ran into an issue with the nutrients I ordered not shipping, and not being stocked locally. Local store gave me a free sample of something to hold me over, and I found what I wanted on the other side of the metro, so that's squared away.

The plants are doing well. 4 confirmed female so far, including the lady I've been providing solo shots of, tonight as well. Shes the looker of the group so far. 4 that look male, 1 more that is likely female but still premature last night, and 8 undetermined

Thanks Marcus, shes been coming along nicely. Hoping to take some cuts in the next few days and start the real party

The final gender tally was 7 females and 10 males. The 7 ladies were trimmed back aggressively to promote those cuts, and 2 males were selected, one each of two easily visible phenotypes that both had unusually hollow main stems and were noticeably more fragrant than the other 8 men. These 2 will be held quietly for a minute

Flowering setup is still under construction, but should come together in time. Just ordered a 315w cmh kit. Ideally I'll run two of those in a 4x4 space, but one lets me get started

No pics today, busy week

Hey bro just wondering have you flipped your g13widow already? What smells are you getting from them.

I finally flipped 7 days ago, 3/10. I took a new job a few months ago, been incredibly busy.... but I'm finally back on track

630w CMH, 4x4 tent. 14 x G13Widow ladies (2 of each of the 7 ladies, 1 in 1 gallon, 1 in 1/2 gallon), and 3 Sensi Star plants (2 ladies, 3 plants total, had one with a root issue)

It's about to get fun. I'll try to do more updates now too

1 week into flowering fully now. Looking good so far.

I included a solo shot of my favorite girl from earlier, and shes still the looker.

I like the way you pack em in there!!! I do a very similar style

I had 4 G13/Widow females that have cured for 3 months and was very disappointed

2 plants were 50% less yielding than all the plants in the tent

2 were monsters in terms of yield but poor effect

Flower time was 56-77 days

Maybe I need a larger test pool

They smell like pickles and taste bland... I love Medicine Man and Mango Widow but this one missed the mark for me

Hey Curious101, thanks man. I have limited tent space (4x4) but I dont see why I shouldn't use as much of that canopy space as I can lol. Glad you agree :)

A pickled smell would be new for me. Not sure if it sounds very appealing or not... heres hoping

Found the same as what curious said.. beautiful plants, autum colours, glistening, photographers instagram wet dream, bland in taste and effect.. hopefully you find better..
Mango widows are nice plants, taste little better but effect is where it's at.. critical skunk is what ticks all boxes for me..

I may run critical skunk in the near future...

But for this widow, I'll try to get pics of each of the 7 in the next day or two. Theres definitely a couple of phenos in there
