August Bank Holiday, 1999 was one of the biggest Exodus free festivals, this was the week after I graduated from university and five of us drove down from Leeds in Ludo's dad's battered old Saab 900, broke down at Watford Gap on the M1 and blagged a lift to Luton in the back of a tranny van with some crazy ravers from Norfolk, they couldn't understand out northern accents and we couldn't understand their east anglian accents but we had a blast and that van probably still stinks of weed and sweat...

exodus.jpg

I had a dozen rolls of undeveloped black and white film from that weekend and Glastonbury that year but threw em away a couple of years ago, costs a fortune to get bw film developed here now, sadly. Still got the Pentax ME camera though...

The Exodus Collective have squatted some farmland near Luton for some years. Over the August bank holiday week-end they ran a massive three day festival, with systems from all over the country, about 20 in total with most playing varieties of trance/techno, though there was also old skool, gabba, drum & bass and more. Loads of people were there, many camping, but even more had just turned up, seemingly planning on doing the whole festival without sleep! Exodus had a massive system in a circus tent and created a really wicked atmosphere in there - packed during the night, and still going all day. I also really liked Junction 14 and the system next door to them, whoever they were. As well as the music, there were camp fires, burger vans, jugglers, all sorts. I met people who had come from London, Norwich, Birmingham, Cambridge and more. Most of the crowd were young, clubber types, but there was also a big contingent of older, hippie-like, travellers. Fantastic.

I was there for 3 nights/2 days, no idea if there was any Cheese there or if I smoked any, I took a block of blonde leb and a couple of ounces of nice Jamaican with me and spent the weekend gurning, raving and generally having it as large as possible. I did get introduced to Glenn Jenkins, I remember talking to him about veggie sausages while tripping our tits off sat on a low brick wall, how even vegetarians crave a good pork sausage or something mad like that...

One big reason why a lot of people are hazy about the Cali scene in the 60s is they were all of their tits most of the time. Same thing applies to the 90s in England, anyone who says they can remember half of it wasn't there, it was all pills, thrills n bellyaches as Shaun Ryder put it and I still think my brain hasn't recovered from the rave decade, I was 16 when the first Happy Mondays record charted so the whole thing happened at the right time for me to still be young enough to remember it, a lot of the older guys who were the age I am now in the 90s are a bit damaged and don't remember most of it very clearly...

Oh yeah, I was one of those who did it without sleep that weekend, slept 27 hours when we got back to Leeds, my housemates were worried I wasn't gonna wake up! lol

Three weeks after that I got a job, cut my hair short and entered the real world of work, taxes and stress...

i know daddyfingers,,,hes cool,,,if you ask him, he might go into more detail,,,

alot of people loved JackH from that crew,,i bet they loved JackH more than they loved sk1 at that time,,,i bet they had a few different JackH clones,,,i bet that crew are still popping JH seeds today,,same with the dudes who loved NL or widow,,,

the fact remains ,,other people do remember cheese from the exodus crew and its not just 1 guy, its loads of people, exodus were infamous for it,,an thats back in the 90`s,,,just ask some old uk smokers from down south,,they will verify what im sayin

if you dont believe me you don believe me jess,,i gain nothing from convincing you,,fact is fact,,whats said is said,,i applaud you for making your own choices bro

Let's look at the actual plants:

Nevil was supplying the seeds to Sensi in 1988, this is Nev's Skunk #1 from the Seedbank catalogue:

This is NL5 x Skunk #1 from the same 1988 Seedbank catalogue:

This is a fake Cheese which is almost certainly NL5xSk1 and has been around in the UK since the late 80s:

This is the Exodus Cheese which is a Skunk #1:

This is Exodus Cheese on the top next to the fake NL5/Sk1 'Berry' Cheese on the bottom:

Those are the two oldest Cheese cuttings, those two have been in either my hands or the hands of my closest mate who grows since 2004, all the hype and myths around Cheese have arisen since, back then there weren't many fakes and it was easy to spot what was Cheese and what wasn't.

As for Cheese not being a Skunk #1, here is a different pheno of Skunk #1 that is called Mallahullu and is still grown in Holland, here by Zeno:

Looks the same as Cheese to me...

Jack was very popular in the late 90s but, it was only available as seeds in early 1995 so Exodus can't have had Jack much before they had Cheese as they got Cheese in mid 95.

As you all know, the UK govt has spent the last few years trying to demonise the word 'Skunk'

Wouldn't be because we grew a shitload of the stuff would it?

Is it me or is all this shit the same? Would it be this demon 'skunk' we have been warned about?

Not suprising that we were groing a load of different skunks and hybrids, that was what was state of the art for indoor growing at the time, just look at Nevil's old catalogues - all the strains he mentions as being the best indoors are skunks - Big Skunk, Skunk 1, NL5 x Sk1, Big Bud etc. People in the UK used to get on the Ferry and nip to Holland to buy seeds and that is why Sensi Seeds were by far the most popular and common - they had a shop in the middle of the RLD, just off Dam Square, a 5 min crawl from Centraal Station, right next door was the Sensi Smile coffeeshop where you could smoke all their strains. It was the first port of call for most Brits, you fell off the train, dumped your bag in your hostel then went to Sensi to get some seeds before you blew your cash on hash. Often your mates had given you some cash to buy seeds for them too.

We didn't have High Times in the UK so we never saw The Seedbank adverts and Nevil didn't have a shop like Sensi so we were all buying stuff from Sensi and the cheapest seeds in the Sensi range were the Skunks, now we know Nevil was supplying Sensi, we didn't at the time. Nevil was selling mail order through his catalogues, Sensi were the retail outlet in Holland, that was why Nev provided them with seeds - they weren't the competition because they only sold in Holland, Nev sold worldwide.

So if you want to know what any of the old UK cuts from the 80s are then just look at an old Sensi catalogue, that is most likely where they came from.

Hi all :)
So getting back on topic, we know from hempy's post that the UK Cheese phenomena was born out of a small handful of blokes from the UK who felt left out by the Cali kids and their elite cutting claims. Which coincidentally, in itself is born out of hype creating from the boards.

The UK Cheese went from first being a picture posted on a board with thousands of growers at Overgrow.com as just being an odd looking plant to being the UK's go to variety to point too that they have a long history of cultivation too. There never were any crazy stories attached however, it was more of a here is a strange looking plant guys kind of deal when it was first posted so many years ago at OG and CW. Later, when the Bubba and OG Kush phenomena at Icmag.com became news some years later, and claims of California being the holy land were rampant, out of nowhere the Cheese was resurrected. Only this time it was an elite, one in a million find and these elaborate stories were attached to its origins. And from there on, more and different varieties all called Cheese have shown up, along with the story evolving to include more and more pieces of information as the years pass.

There is no doubt the UK is full of varieties, clones, called Cheese. But which one is the original? Every guy who has a Cheese clone will tell you, his is the original.

What if you smoked them all? Surely that will tell you which is the real one? lol.

My money is on the guy who has SSH, that he called Cheese, beating everybody's ass! He will then surely have the real Cheese right? Because his was better than every body else's? The proof is right there, the cheese is the strongest one of the bunch! Problem solved....lol :D :D

Not so fast Watson!

There is no original Cheese in the U.K, but there are plenty of clones called Cheese to be found I am sure. Instead of attempting to acquire mystery plants called Cheese from the U.K for all of you collectors, why not just find the truest source of Skunk#1 available and look for your own badass plant of Skunk#1 origins? I would recommend Shit, likely among the best deals on the entire MNS menu.

But there are plenty of Skunk #1 varieties to be found here at MNS and elsewhere. I am very familiar with Skunk #1, and I have smoked it extensively, its used as a fundamental building block in the entire for a reason. No question about it.

What utter bullshit.

Are you just making this up to annoy people?

Cheese existed long before that one picture.

For Jesse to build a whole conspiracy aorund one picture is just crazy.

We know what? Just because hempy, an old fool the other side of the planet who knows nothing about the UK scene made up something you now present it as fact.

Fuck off Jesse, this forum would be better off without you and the thick layer of bullshit you spread everywhere.

Why are you making up all this crap about Cheese?

You still haven't answered the question if you have ever seen, smelt of smoked Cheese...

What a dumbfuck...

Some say Psychosis is Cheese x Widow, others say Cheese x Rhino. LLP may have an opinion on this...

Think its so funny we got someone from over the atlantic who has never smoked, grown or even been near a cheese cutting, has got ALL his info from the net,has been talking with people who have been around at the time yet still cant smell the coffee[as u boys like to say]???

When youre human there's such a thing as grace, say when you thought something was the case and it turns out not so the guy with a more ego just wont accept that he has said something which is an untruth and argues in the face of experience and logic[with inexperience and inaccuracy],when someone else would learn from the episode and have some GRACE about being wrong,we all are,so whats the big deal this time?

Maybe its cos you think you have made yourself look daft by passing around this non-sense in a most public way?

as i say we are all wrong at times or get the wrong end of the stick or trust someone or something we should'nt have.Normaly when im wrong[which is often]there is a lesson in there, maybe this one is to verify your sources b4 vouching that this is truth.

Life eh?;)

i was talking with llp about it the other day he says he cant remember lol, but will find out when he hooks up with his old peeps. ive got a medman male i will hit my exo with and experiment.

Wouldn't it just solve this whole thing if someone with a proper Cheese sent a clone to JessE?
Although i would of thought he would of had the chance to get it if he wanted it,
Personally i think nostalgia plays a part in the whole thing, Its not as readily available in some parts of the UK so if some people smoke it for the first time and its head n shoulders above the rest then all they would be talking about is "ahh do you remember how Nice that cheese was" when back smoking some standard home-grown crap,:D
I know I've had it from smoking Bubblegum for the first time, All I've ever wanted is that delicious taste, but still haven't found it from any seed and even when sampling in Amsterdam, I jst put it down to nostalgia with it being so long ago my mind fabricating how nice it was, although it's more than likely it was just a great phenotype:) which I'm yet to find
Any way back to cheese, Someone fancy sending JessE a few clones over and 1 might make it:confused: Thats even if he would want it,

Cheese is already widely available in the US, I sent it there, friends send it there, it;s been there for years.

I know what you mean about Bubblegum, a good pheno is amazing but not that easy to find...

I thought that the reason you don't get the Original Bubblegum any more was because the original Mother was nicked, so it had to be remade & that's why it isn't exactly the same. I may be wrong tough.

Well, the original Indiana Bubblegum cutting is still widely held.

I believe there were two variants in Holland - an indica kushy one that Adam of THSeeds used and a more sativa massive yielding one that Serious used, the Serious one tastes great but lacks potency. The THSeeds one I haven't grown.

Hey CheeseHunter,i dont think you are seeing it with rose tinted glasses as i can remember the last oz of bubblegum i bought was maybe 2001/2 and it just stank of pure hubba bubba and tasted like it,big stinkyness but a light high.
Been looking for that ever since, got a plant muming up that is supposed to have a bubblegum taste so i hope so,its SOG's bubble n sqeak.

It was Adams from THSeeds that was nicked i believe B_H. He gave his bubblegum to Serious & they added more Sativa to the Mix.

here's what he has to say about it.

YouTube - TH Seeds Bubblegum

Take it from 57 seconds

gets more interesting, cheese really is jack, really is diesel. ;)

Problem was everyone on overgrow renaming the same cut 10 different things.

i always thought the cheese was a commercial strain (for those crazy enough to grow the stink)

The plant was given to people as gifts as a simple act of friendship its not about names or money. Thats what exodus was all about peace and none profit. Thats what I dont like about BIG Buddha the spirit has completely gone from the plant when you start bringing money into it. Just my opinion. Cheers. CF.
