Posting Photos On The Site

Hello everyone!
Lately I've noticed that the site has been slowing down. I'm experiencing slower photo loads, I'm sure you are too. The posts that contain pictures larger than 2mb are taking a toll, especially when several photos that size are posted in the same thread. I see pictures that are even 3mb. As an example, a 2.5mb pic would render a 22" x 17" poster-sized photo. A 1.75mb pic would render a smaller 17" x 11" poster-sized photo. It really is not something we can take advantage of on our phones or laptops. I, as well as you I am sure, would prefer a faster web site instead of a large photo that slows the system down and is not really needed to convey your grow. Can we voluntarily keep our picture sizes limited to 1.0 -1.5mb? I'd appreciate it if we could get everybody on the same page on this issue. We would benefit and the website would appreciate it. Thank you!

I've really noticed it on my grow diary threads, the pages where I've posted full pics of everything take absolutely ages to load- will start making things smaller for sure and agree to going back to 1/1.5mb

This site has been blazing fast for pictures since the last big site problem. A whole page of pictures loads faster than I can blink my eye! Very interesting to hear it's loading slow. What is running slow? phones? Ipads? Chrome Books? Desktops? Windows? Macs? Android? iOS?

Windows laptops on my end. Perhaps my internet provider. This morning gave me 503 errors several times.

Yes, I got a few 503 errors this morning. The HTTP 503 Service Unavailable server error response status code indicates that the server is not ready to handle the request. Without reading the system log it is impossible for me to determine why we were getting the errors. Common causes are that a server is down for maintenance or perhaps the system was under a Denial Of Service attack or even the old fashioned Ping of Death attack. As we are thousands of miles apart it was not likely your ISP's server. Was what's his name performing any system maintenance at that time? Trouble shooting networked computers for 40 years I just can not blame every single error on the forum to someone loading a 2mb picture.

We could try loading the smallest pictures possible - it we get any errors after that we can eliminate pictures as the problem. It is taking the long way around the barn but the process of elimination eventually gets you to the real problem.

I have to agree with you @longball but do we really need 20"x 20" pictures to get our point across when unlike you, many of us view on smaller screens? With regards to storage, one can use up quite a bit of real estate in a very short time. E.g., one reason I no longer use RAW images for picture taking. 10-30MB used up my HD quickly. And editing software was slower in rendering those larger pics. I suspect host problems as well as updates needing to be processed. Though I don't recall as much lag time or 503 errors occuring earlier when we had the 1MB limit. Seems these types of problems occured after that last big update? Perhaps it has something to do with the aging infrastructure here in the US lol. Throwing out guesses here.

*edit BTW, when I do get a 503, I try to load another website at the same time and it loads up quickly no problem so I think it is localized as you suggest.

unlike you, many of us view on smaller screens?.......And editing software was slower.......

I don’t think loading 2mb pics is causing our problem and we can find that out in a couple hours. Change picture size to 75kb/reboot server. When system comes up, the slow connections will now be faster. Errors will disappear. If still slow and errors then it’s not the picture size being loaded that is causing the problem for people. The problem is either coming from the Mr Nice server(of course it is, we all know it) or the ISP server they use. Being retired, I don’t have the software here at home to tell you which server it is, but the folks running both those servers do!

The smaller screens are not the problem either. Screen size is just a personal choice and it does not affect the Internet. I have a bigger screen but a 75kb limit is fine with the right compression. The size is 8-9x smaller than the 640kb limit when I joined. This should tell you right away if the pictures are the problem. When we get these errors, we all go to another site. Without being computer experts, instinct tells us if another site is working then the problem is not the Internet or us. Sometimes I go to many sites and they all always work. This is over many years. It’s clear to all of us the problem is with Mr. Nice, not us. This is not a problem we can fix in the forum. Only Mr Nice computer folks can fix this. That’s the truth. Straight up, and no sugar coating. The size of my computer screen has no place in this thread, yet it gets continually mentioned in these picture threads

When we get 503 errors and go to other sites, we see photographs. Depending where we go, we see sports, news, animals, gardens, War in the Ukraine, there are pictures everywhere and they load quick. Some sites we upload pics to if we know the limit. No problems anywhere, only Mr Nice. As a trouble shooter this is all rather compelling evidence that the solution to the problem is on Mr Nice’s server. Going house to house and measuring computer screens of the members will not help. The correct answer is to ‘dial in’ to the Mr Nice server and get the problem fixed. After fixing the problem, a server reboot is a must for the change to take place.

My large screen and musashi’s slow laptop have no effect on the Internet as our computers have never been on it. We connect to an ISP server and the server takes our request and translates it to ‘Internet language.’ The ISP server and the ‘Mr Nice’ server then ‘meet’ in ‘Internet language’ and perform a 'handshake'. If successful, the computers connect. The handshake takes place at the Transport layer which is Layer 4 of the Transmission Control Protocol. If Mr Nice is the only server you cannot connect to then the problem is most likely on Mr Nice’s end. Sometimes you’ve seen in the news that they want to arrest someone for illegal Internet activity but they don’t know exactly who it is. As I mentioned earlier, your computer only goes as far as the ISP server. The Law can only track the ISP server but not you as you are not on the Internet. So, the Law gets an Arrest Warrant and serves it on the ISP to find out who you are. That went thru the courts as a privacy issue. The ISP's lost and are now required by law to give up the information of the I.P. address user.

This tells you that your computer is not actually on the Internet. It also tells you that my screen size is not causing Internet problems as it has never been on the Internet. The same with musashi’s slow computer. He is not causing Mr Nice server problems as his laptop has never been on the Internet. Over the years there have been many threads about slowness, pictures, errors, connections, auctions – how ‘bout “less talking, more fixing.” We, on the forum can’t fix this. The problem doesn’t belong here, it belongs in the front office and computer room.

Is the problem between the Mr Nice server and their ISP server? Has anyone checked this? If the problem is on their ISP end they may not be aware of it until someone from Mr Nice calls them? Has anyone checked with them? So far we have eliminated my computer screen and musashi's slow computer as a source of Mr Nice's server problem. That is progress!

Enough with the bullshit. I’ve given an actual computer system problem solver. Change the max loadable picture file size to 75kb and reboot server. Servers must be rebooted now and then for updates and maintenance. We have never been given courtesy notes about the server going down for maintenance. Even my damn Bank lets me know the server will be down for maintenance from midnight til 4am on Sunday mornings. Was it down for maintenance the other night? Is that when/why we get 503 errors?

Please send out a notice when you are rebooting the server after changing max picture size. lol Please feel free to forward this to TPTB.

Thanks,

Longball

Thank you brother. As the messenger I can only do so much and am powerless to do the hard work required to resolve this once and for all. I suspected the same and the problem is an irregular one. There are days when I can open several pages at once and other days when each page requires a log in. I will forward all this information to TPTB in hopes of resolution. Thanks again for your thoughts.
