Post dry ice germination experiment

Hey everybody....

So I made some seeds during my last harvest in order to try and preserve what I was working on and also just to fuck around for future fun...

I was running two selected clones that I've had in possession for a couple years and I was getting kind of tired of running them and also have a move comin up shortly.... The plan was to hit a couple branches here and there and to keep the pollen as isolated as possible... Well I fucked up and smoked a bunch of hash before deciding that it was now time to pollenate... Needless to say a semi disaster happened and I tripped and threw pollen everywhere... The plants in the back were seeded with a couple here and there and exactly what I was trying to accomplish... The ones in front were completely seeded to the point that I wasn't wasting time even trying to smoke the buds... Good thing I have an obsession with hash making....

Well I wanted to pass some out to friends to test and enjoy so the first batch of hash I literally picked through one plant at about 3 1/2 ounces completely seeded.... All those seeds were saved but was a pain in the ass... After the first week of harvest test germ rates were super poor as expected... Around 25% or less...

Two weeks later I did some official germ testing of my own and 48 out of 50 popped and tapped in under 36 hrs.... So the germ rates are solid but I still don't know what finished product will be like...

So mean while I had made probably two more batches of dry ice sift and bho and sugar and tincture etc... I told you I'm concentrate mad!!!!

Picking seeds became pointless as I had already saved a couple of hundred seeds for my personal stash and had given/thrown away countless amounts...

Ok... So sorry for the ramble just wanted you to understand where I'm coming from...

After throwing out probably 500 to 1000 seeds after they had gone through the dry ice shaking I got a little curious...

During the dry ice sift the plant material is literally ground to dust and the seeds are stupid easy to sift using a regular window screen... This got me thinking in the ole peanut...... What if???

What if the seeds could germinate after they had been sifted and ran in dry ice??? It would make harvesting seeded plants incredibly easy... If you haven't tried to harvest seeds before then you might not understand... For those that have sorted seeds dear god would this make things super efficient and easy NOT TOO MENTION MAKING HASH AT THE SAME TIME!!

Well push comes to shove and I'm bored and can not currently have any plants growing so I decided what the hell... Instead of just throwing the seeds in the compost/trash yard whatever I decided in the name of personal curiousity and boredom that I would try and germ the seeds...

I took a small handful... Probably around 100 or so seeds... And threw them in a plastic lid layered damp paper towels and wrapped in plastic wrap and threw them in an empty drawer.... Stays completely dark and it's around 78 degrees at all times....

Now normally I sprout seeds according to the moon( now is not the best time for moon planting) and usually soak in a shotglass of water until sunk before transferring to paper towels so sort of different than my normal ways but sill effective none the less...

Either way I just thought I'd share and let everyone know what happens... Doubt there is any interest in this sort of stuff but if they all sprout then I just might be on to something....

Seeds were randomly pulled in a giant handful and washed of plant matter... Ranged from fully mature to slighty immature.... Had been dry iced I'd say about a week ago and left out to evaporate the ice... Started to make some sugar but the fucking power went out so I had to do something...

Should know in a couple days what's up and I'll be sure to let you folks know...

Anyone want to take guesses on what happens??? I'd bet a joint on over 50% germinating... We shall see...

Hope all is well with everyone...

Have a good one...

one thing comes to mind , if your shareing them with others who want to long term store them/save them , or you yourself want to , ive read it is not good to freeze them then retry freezing them after they have thawed , and sure as sh!t the dry ice had frozen them

other then that i see no reason why they shouldnt germ , unless the dry ice causes to much of a deap freeze

peace

It will be interesting to see what happens. Dry Ice is pretty cold (-109 F), a lot colder then the normal freezer. I would definately not use fresh seeds, they should be dry as dry can be to avoid any cell rupture due to moisture. You would have to dry the seeded buds to the bone.

It might be better just to let the buds dry, break them up, do the seed roll thing to get the seeds you want and then make the hash. I know that is the step you are trying to eliminate, but if you want viable seeds for sure, it's probably the safest.

Some clarification....

Hi bob, mjp,bh....

Appreciate the thoughts and guesses... This is by no means a serious or life changing event... Just some curiosity....

Bob.... I hear you on the double freeze.... I never like to freeze something and let it thaw and then freeze it again... Honestly I hate the taste of most freezer food and I really only like the ice makers........ Was thinking about what you said and it got me thinking if everything happened in nature than the plants would grow, be seeded, finish and die onto the ground.... Winter would come and with snow and frost the seeds would surely be frozen yet protected.... Once spring comes the seeds that managed to mature and stay unharmed by the frost would then sprout.... Is this correct??? Or does it take more than one season or even less time for viable untouched nature produced seeds?? Wild cannabis that is.... Opinion?? Seeds in the wild may even go through a double freeze naturally?!? Interesting....

Mjp and bh..... Sorry for the rambling being a little confusing... I'm not good with established time lines or time in general... Space time continuum and what not.....

The seeds that I am attempting to germinate have been harvest over a month ago atleast... If not two months.... Like I said... Bad with time...

Either way... I harvest whole plants... By harvest time I pull or let all fans die... Whole plant is hung with all worthwhile trim still intact... Plants hung for atleast a week.... Then separated from stem and into brown bags is hashing and into jars for smokey.... This batch of seeds is plenty dry and plenty viable... I talked to shanti before any of this and we decided that atleast three weeks cure on seeds before trying to germinate is best... So these are plenty healthy and WERE NOT FRESH WHEN DRY ICED!!

That being said most seeds are mature... Sorry I don't care who you are but there are going to be partially immature seeds on every plant but I assure you I gave them ample time so that atleast 90-95% of the seeds are packet worthy.... They will never be packaged and sold but you catch my drift...

Probably also worth noting that before I run any material through bubble bags... Or any screen for that matter... I always break down and de stem the buds/trim... I've poked holes before being lazy so no more of that....

Indeed the seeds were super deep froze.... And after that thy sat in a 5 gal bucket for about a week to 10 days so thy had time to come back to normal tempe... Honestly thinking about it more I doubt any will sprout... That's some extreme temps.... Who knows really... We shall see here pretty shortly.... Thanks for the interest guys...

All comments/questions/bets are much appreciated...

Have a good one everyone.... Time for some hash....

OG

Well that was easy....

Ok... Couple days later now...

102 out of 106 seeds popped and tapped and were healthy and ready to be planted....

Looks like the resiliency factor of ganj has to be upped again...

Completely frozen by dry ice and beaten to shit and I still got better germ rates than most seed companies out there today... Suck it!!!

Haha I'm stoked... Super excited to see it worked... If I ever start a seed company(read"never") then I know my sorting method.... Any of you guys know how to patent this kind of shit?? Or if it has already been done???

Yesterday I made some bho and froze like 50 seeds in the process... Placed those in a shot glass of water and they were cracked ready to root today...

Damn seeds are like the honey badger!!!

Actually more like Serbians or victims of Africa militias.... They all now share a mass grave in my back yard...

Funny thing is I threw out like 200 seeds about a month ago and I found a couple random plants poppin out...

Hah oh well.... Wild cannabis wooh!!

Have a good one...

DR OG.....

got any left ? id like to hear if they still germ after being re frozen in your fridge/freezer

pretty sweet idea though if you know there wont be any storing them frozen , coulda saved me hours n hours of time if u hadda posted this a long time ago damn you :p

peace

I'm surprised, but nothing suprises me with this plant anymore. How long do you think those seeds were on the dry ice? As Bob said it would be interesting to take it one step further with an additional freeze/ thaw (in the freezer) and see what the germ rate is. Or just storing them in the fridge for a while and test.

More details.... More roots....

Hey guys....

The seeds frozen by bho and then shot glassed to paper towel have all popped as well except for two or three that were not viable in the first place...

For your enjoyment I have taken another small handful and placed them in the freezer.... I was in a rush to work this morning but caught bobs request and managed to throw some in the ice box.... Left them uncovered too so they are really exposed to the elements....

Hey bh.... I was surprised as well.... There's so many myths out there I'd really love to bust them all.... One day.... One by one they shall fall....

As for freezing times.... Well atleast 10 minutes pre and durin the shaking....

After that I would think at least another 10-12 hrs to let all the dry ice evaporate.... Talking about 5 pounds of dry ice and a qp of seeds and material....

I'll let the seed in the freezer do their thing over night and then try and germ them.... I've never kept or tried to germ seeds from the freezer.... Do they need to thaw to room temp before soaking or will the soak be enough to bring them to regular temps?? Shit guess I could do half Nd half....

I doubt there are any better ways to sort seeds... No joking....

Hash bowls in the name of science!!!

Have a good one everyone.....

You're havin' all kinds of fun. I think dropping them into water right out of the freezer might be quite a shock to them, lol. As if blasting them with butane or rattling them around with dry ice isn't. Since you're experimenting and if you have enough, do both, soak some direct from freezer and thaw some first.

I just remembered something and you alluded to it earlier in this thread. Last December I found a seedling growing in a crack in a parking lot, I managed to pluck it up and get it to grow (I couldn't resist...somebody probably rolled a joint, found some seeds and tossed them). There had been plenty of frosts and even snow the night before so this thing had to have gone thru some freeze/thaw cycles. Being in a crack in black top most have made a little micro-clime enabling it to sprout. I still have the plant, a nice little indy, no herms.

So what are you going to do with all these sprouts, lease some land?

It's science!!

Hah hey bh... Thanks for the interest and replies...

Cool story about the crack plant... I'm amazed more and more every day...

The BHO and CO2 seedlings are shared a similar grave about 1 foot by 2 feet in the run off delta of my air conditioning condensation line....

They all broke soil.... Haha... Got a little mini plantation... I'll take a picture if I get around to it... It's quite funny... 100 plants in a tiny space all randomly in perfect rows from natures touch...

Seeds in freezer are well.... Still in the freezer... Hah

Will get some thawing and others straight into water.... Honestly after all this there is no doubt in my mind that these will all sprout as well...

Leads me to wonder how seed banks can have poor germination rates... It's just too easy and I'm willing to bet that most stories of bad germ rates are due to poor methods or growers... Much like hermis... However I have grown some perfect plants that freak Hermed and really pissed me off...

Dry ice kicks ass in every way....

Have a good one

I got a few old seeds which have been stored in the bottom of my draw in a dime bag for over a year now. Do you think I can germinate them? I reckon I can.

Say OG, how do you store dry ice and how long does it last. Have you ever had any experience with dry ice melting before?

How do you handle dry ice? Do you use special gloves? What would happen if it came in contact with your skin?

Here's a site I found...

only one way to find out right??? I got some old BOG seeds that I was thinking about cracking sometime... I've got too much on the plate as it is though...

Hey ganja dude.... Thanks for stopping by... Even though our experiments are stupid... Who the hell freezes seeds or trims the roots off clones... Attention everyone... OG is full retard ( I can say this because o was supposed to be born mentally and physically handicapped... Extra chromosomes baby!!! My mother also taught and volunteered with autistic children for decades and I'm proud to call her mom... Were all a little messed up right???)... Don't listen to anything I have to say and I assure you all advice given is Terrible... Haha... Sorry... Love those jokers... Hi fools!!!

Anyways... What thread am I in??? Oh yeah mine....

Before I answer you direct I wanted everyone to know that the seeds from the freezer( that's the twice frozen ones for all the new comers) have also all sprouted... I'm gonna say that if seeds are dry and viable then no matter what is done regarding freezing will have any impact at alll... Dear god don't make me freeze and re thaw and freeze and rethaw again....!!! There going to germ!!

The next tests will involve heat.... I had to use my
Micro torch to melt a rusted bolt on my toilet to change the handle(read bug fucking pain in my ass... Hours wasted) and I got to thinking about how hot I could get seeds before trying to germ them?? How about 250 degrees in the oven for 15-20 minutes??? Anysuggestions/comments on me failing or succeeding or immight just make canna popcorn... Mmmmmmm

Ok about dry ice.....

I buy from the store only the amount I am about to use... Had 5 extra pounds one time and it barely made it over night... So yes... "melts" fast... Straight sublime evaporation... No melting...

Dry ice and water doesn't mix well... Will freeze everything and boil and hiss and steam and pretty much make a mess... Fog is fun to play around with though... So is putting a little chunk of dry ice and some water in a 2 liter and capping it to go BOOM!!! Probably should put a disclaimer somewhere around here but fuck it... You blow your hand off it's your problem....

Side note... Take those warnings on inline fans and blowers seriously... Lost the tip of my pinky finger to a squirrel cage blower... Thank god for finger nails...heh..

That being said I have a pretty decent method of handling dry ice...

If will come in a block in "thick" plastic... If you touch and hold with pressure it is going to "burn" you... Instant frostbite... There's a reason why they say to use gloves.... Mere mortals should not attempt to handle dry ice without gloves of some sort... Specialty gloves aren't necessary...

Now that being said I do not use gloves... I have man hands that have been burned and cut and abused for a long time... But I can also hold a frozen BHO extractor tube.... Soo I don't know... Have definitely held dry ice for too long and it has left some sores/burns... Nothing a week and some antibacterial can't take care of....

Where was I.... Hmm so I like to take the block of ice and the bag it came in and put it inside of two more regular plastic grocery bags trash bags whatever... I then take a large wooden or metal spoon and get to smacking... Old grandma trick to make crushed ice... Not too hard as to break the plastic(thus multiple layers) but hard enough to start breaking the ice... I move it around and lay it on table and smash it around until all the big pieces are well... Not big... Small marble sized pieces and lots of powdered ice is what I prefer... Personal preference... From there it's into the bucket and shakey shaky...

So all in all it's not so dangerous but you can definately make it dangerous... Basically comes down to a saying often said by an old Brazilian friend... Have hands of man or hands of girl?? When in doubt wear gloves I guess is the right thing to say... Don't forget your protective eye wear!!! Haha... Whatever...

Nothing to be afraid of ganja man... I use metal tongs and other random utensils from time to time depending on the scenario...

Overall no... I don't do too much special except smoke too much hash... I would advise you to not stick your head in the bucket and start breathing the CO2 gas escaping... I like to evaporate the bucket after hashing in my flower room just for shits and giggles...

Wooh.. I'm in a rambling mood... I'm staying away from guiness's rambling thread... I'll out ramble anyone anyday... Just sent a 10000 character private message... Jesus... Time to talk to admini about increasing that shit!!!

Have a good one everyone... Gardens looking sweet btw gm1... Next couple of weeks are gonna be niiiiice... Can't wait for the sharks!!!

O rambling G,

I like the AC line irrigation system for your plantation by the way. You are playing around with the seeds.

With the germination thing from sellers, I would venture to guess that any poor germination may be resulting from age and improper packaging and storage. Not that growers aren't a part of it too.

Keep having fun...

Haha I promise I'll eventually get a pic of the "plantation" up here at some point before they get wacked... It's actually quite a funny sight... Would think I have a micro smurf population tending to it... It's a perfect 100000:1 replica of a commercial farm... Spring fed ac line to small holding pond leaching the seeded delta... I'm a riot... Haha... Honestly it's rained every day for the last 2 weeks atleast with 90 humidity and temps around 90-100... Everything is running super smooth and being fertilized by the huge great dane manure and urine... Haha...

Made a new batch of CO2 sift and got a little crazy again... Took straight frozen seeds and dropped them in a shot glass of water... All cracked and showed signs of rooting... Leaving them in there to see how long of tap roots I can get in straight shot glasses and water... Also took some straight frozen seeds and put them in my paper towel method and they all popped and have over half inch taps... So I'm thinking paper towels are better than the shot glass as far as speed goes... Shot glass work all the same...

BH and others.... What are the bad ways to store seeds... When does germination start to decline... Aside from smashing them what can I do to make it hard for the seeds to germ?? Heat??? What are the improper ways of storing seeds???

Got another little side project in the works but that will come in due time... Jut a little foreshadowing...

Take it easy everyone... Hooray for the olympics... The beach volleyball woman were looking niiiiiice... Can't wait to see Kobe tearing it up... Gonna get that gold medal and come back and win the NBA championship... Ugh..

Have a good one everyone...
