MKS

I've mostly a forum reader here and at a few other canna sites as I've always been alittle paranoid but I wanna post that I'm subscribed and looking forward to updates on your grow. For all the info and positives associated with this strain there are only a couple completed grows. Especially considering the heck of a time I'm having grabbing this on auction. I will have it even if I gotta pay straight retail, which I'm sure is still a value. Keep up the good work.
Peace

Nice looking plants ... you're finding the same thing Cptn and I did, a very vigorous, healthy line. And yes, Cptn's advice is spot on, you just can't tell too much from the look of the pheno as far as potency and aroma go.

Once flowering has really set in, 4 to 5 weeks, I spend a lot of time just smelling the flowers and usually have a very good idea what's going to be special based on that. But the smoke test is the final and only proof ... I do find that early bud testing will reveal the keepers, even if they improve later after curing. But I've always figured it out before then.

Hey BR, good to be posting together again.
What I meant was that there is no point trying to read these phenos in veg. They only reliably differentiate in flower.

The difference was pretty clear in my pack:
The short, fast, rounded top cola plants are weak and fuzzy headed. Skunk dom.
Tall, long flowering, pointed top buds can be special stuff. There is a sativa looking pheno and a hashplant pheno, both tall and late flowering. Both are great.
Just be ready to be disappointed in the short, fast, round topped cola phenos with their sexy pink hairs.

Hey Cptn, good to chat with you brother. Yes, I think I understood and you have a far better understanding than I. I have only run 4 MKS females... so far, every one was a "pointed top" bud with some distinctive aromas.

I ran one pheno, MKS #4, for about 5 clone runs. Good smoke and, oh my the stink! Right through the baggie like it wasn't even there. I just could not get a decent yield out of it though ... I let the cut go after this last finisher this month. I still have 10 or 12 seeds though, so the search continues.

So Cptn... what fun stuff are you exploring now?

I'm testing MNS Angel Heart and chasing the elusive "bubba kush" right now, just for fun, from Mosca and an S1 off the 'bay from a small private breeder as well as a few kush seeds gifted to me by a friend.

cheers ....

37days of flower

Hello to all, thanks for following. Once again sorry for the last pics. Hope these are more usefull. First of all here are my general impressions of MKS overall. WOW, it is by far in my limited experience one of the most fun plants I've had the pleasure to grow. Somewhat slow to root, but once she takes, BOOM, a sturdy, vibrant plant that promises a good yeald and many different flavors and smells. She clones easly and appears to be a varity that will grow well in all styles of grow. Plan on testing extensivly outside this comming summer. I got 100% germ from 10 beans and 5 fems. One just did'nt make the cut (no sign of sex 3plus weeks after the first one showed, weak growth). The other four are the ones you see here. First three pics are #2. It appears to be the one that is the most MK leaning. It is the most open noded and the only one that split well when topped (clones also). Has the lemony piney scent. Next two pics are #4. "Is there a skunk in here?" Without a doubt the smelliest of the bunch. She is the one the I smell in the room. It's not realy the acrid sort of skunk smell, but more of an over ripe (rotting?) fruit smell. Quite yummy, and did I mention sticky also? Next two are #5. Tallest, she is very much tward the MK side but with a thicker heaver growth pattern like #4, buds are more like #2 and have the lemony pine smell. Last pics are the runt #6. Short, and round topped, she appears to be just the type I've been warned to avoid. Great looks, no substance. No real smell yet she, is the one that appears to be the one that will finish first. If she were the only hen in the house, she would look great. My guess is that #2 and 5 turn out to be the most kush leaning and #4 the most skunk like and the the best producer. I'll keep you posted. Thanks for looking.

Many Thanks Yesca,Yes,many good smells. The #2&5 have the piney smell with some lemon fuel or sorta like some lemon pine cleaner. Not too strong yet but it's there. Think it will come on stronger later perhaps in the cure. Number 4 is just plain stinky! As I said above, it smells overwhelmingly of fruit. Almost a rotting smell. Not unpleasant, but almost too much if you stick your nose right in the main cola. And poor little #6, well... she smells ... like a plant. She does have a whif of the fruit but I'm never sure if it is'nt her stinky neighbor #4. All are quite nicely covered in trics and feel very solid. Speaking of solid, notice .. no stakes. They are so thickly stemmed that I think they may not need it. Going to make a fine outdoor plant. FishDog

Day 39 sniff report

Todays noseing of #4 came up with a ... well .. first scent of BO yes BO but it quickly settled into a very fruity smell. Not unpleasant at all, just a bit surprising since it is the first thing that hits. The fruit smells are deep and too complex for me to break down. Suffice to say YUMMY! Hope the flavors of the smoke reflect the odors. The other three phenos are pretty much the same as described above eccept they all seem to have put on a bit of weight. Humm.. Thanks for looking.

Looks like you are reading them well now FishDog.
See how you couldn't really pick out the shorties in veg?
Not saying it is a waste of time, just that expectations should be realistic.
We are not growing these plants for leaves after all.
Flower time is where we have the most expression info available.

I think the smell you are describing as pine is usually described as juniper in MK. Its a little different. Sharper, not as sweet
Smells evolve in this strain. A bit more detail for you on the smells by pheno.

Tall:
sativa - you may see purple leaves just before harvest, and she puts out a diesel fuel/rubber smell in addition to fruit, skunk, and the usually "hash" smells
hashplant - where you will find the most lemon smell. I found the smells from this expression to evolve, honey, cotton candy, floral perfume, all of which are more delicate, volatile terpenes than lemon and juniper.

Short:
who cares :)

Hope this helps.
I'd tell you to kill that shorty now, but you would never really believe it till you see yourself ;-)

cheers

Nooooo

NO Cptn I can't just kill her, well not for a couple more weeks anyway. I feel I should take her to term and smoke her to honor her spirit. She is rather sexy in her short plump sorta way (sorta reminds me of my first wife, mostly in the lack of promise department) ,but the lack of smells tells me you are most likley correct. Her stinky sisters hold much more promise. I am after good flavors as much as anything. Capt, if I may, What do you mean by a "hash plant". I'm guessing that my #4 pheno is along the lines of what you are talking about. The #2 is the most sativa like and the bud structure most resembles what I think of as kush. The #5 appears to be a delightful mix of the two. Thanks for your help. FishDog

Nice job Fish, ya that little ordorless one might surprise you:) Nice strong plants as you say, would like to see the outdoor version for sure, keep us posted!

Thanks Stonesplitter, I see we face some of the same seasonal challenges growing outdoors. I will try to post some pics of my outdor stuff this comming season. I plan on running all three of the phenos you see in the pics. The little one is cloned but no plans for her till we smoke her. Very interested in your skunk/haze grow. Eight weeks you say? Going to run them outside?

Kill the little roundheaded one

Chopped the little one (#6) a day or so ago.She may have wanted a few more days to a week, but I felt it best to run the co2 longer for her more promising sisters and make more room for them. She spent 36 hrs. in the dark and cold. Just as I was told, she is not going to be around long. She has developed some smell but nothing to get excited about. Skunky but nothing to write home about. The take was meager at best. Lots of leaves, lots of trimming. Top buds are solid but small and the popcorn will not amount to much. She's quite sticky, but the proof is in the puffing. Don't expect much but at this time I have not much else to smoke so this will work for now. It will also relieve the temptation to rush the others. She has sacrificed herself for the good of the others. Tell ya how she smokes and more pics of the others soon. Thanks for looking. FishDog

The Native Americans do not believe in "catch and Release". You caught it, now do it the honor of using it to it's fullest extent. All things have a spirit which must be honored. I grew it, now I must smoke it (and use the trim and other stuff to make hash).:)

Smoke report/the Little One

Is I stated above, I chopped #6 about two weeks ago and have been smoking her as she has dried.Yeald was small(about an ounce) some of the buds were nice , the top cola in particular (see pics). Taste with little cure is so-so but does bode well of the delights I think her sisters hold. Buz is sorta "old school" indica. Stoney, lazy and does not last as long as better weeds tend to do. All in all it rates way above the last (and I do mean Last) mistake I made with GHS. A much better plant than one of their highly touted strains. Not a keeper, but at my level of skill, she was by no means a waste of time. I'ts allways fun to see how all the different phenos play out even if they aren't all "Grails".

Chop day #2 day 57 of flowering

Had to pull her because of some grower induced stress and fucking spider mites(also my fault).Looks pretty good and does seem to have gone to term (8 weeks). Took only the top half to let some of the lower stuff ripen up some. Looks to be a good yeald, upper buds are nice and dense but the lower popcorn may not be as great. She has a fruity smell but it is light for now . I hope they develope more as she dries. Thanks for looking.

Nice round Fishdog. I got this strain on my radar too.

Can you describe your set up in a bit more detail please such as lights, nutes size of grow room etc? TIA.

GM1

Thanks GM1. These are in 10 gal. soft pots with straight promix. I use the Fox Farm trio of liquids with Cal-Magic or Cal-Mag. These had Pro-Tect (Rhino Skin) in veg until they just started to bud. I used some Big-Up fourth and fifth weeks. I do not have a true system but follow loosly the FF formula, never feeding as much as they perscribe. I feel that these could have been pushed a bit nute wise, espc. N. Sorry I have no EC or PH numbers for you, I just don't have that sort of gear at this juncture. They were under two 600watt MH for about thirty days of veg in those pots and the first two weeks of flower then HPS. Co2 was used from day 18 of flower to day 48.These are the seed plants and received a total of about 100 days of veg. time. First three weeks under floro. then under a 400 MH. All were topped at the fifth node but only one (#2) split. All were cloned and topping has had a much greater affect this time around and added more side branching. They appear to take to LST and supercroping. Great strain! Large sturdy stems right up to the top. Mine did not need staking, although I will begin tying out the side branching on my outdoor girls which should increase yield. Let me know if there is anything else I can tell you. More bud porn and smoke reports to follow. Thanks for looking. BTW,all of these seemed to me to be about 8 weekers. I have let the #5 go a few days longer. She'll get 9 at the most.

Chop day #4 day 59

Time to take her down. Took only the top half to allow the lower stuff to ripen a bit more. Still lots of nice buds on the lower branches. Looks to be the best yield. She has the most smells and is good and sticky. The smells are mostly fruity with the afore mentioned rotting smell. Never thought "Dank" would be much a part of my vocabulary, but I must bow, for this is a smell one would could call dank. Not good at parsing out smells yet, so after they have cured I will try to relay them, perhaps with the aid of a few other noses.
