LOW terpene cannabis

I'm curious, does anyone have any examples of fine cannabis with surprisingly low terpene levels?

As no one has answered yet, let me throw in a dumb question or maybe it is a lack of knowledge question? How would one know one has surprisingly low terpene levels without sending a sample to a lab?

ortega is my keeper so far out of one of each of critical skunk (also odourless), master kush skunk and nl5 skunk

it is basically odourless, but the faint smells it gives off are of good quality, nicer than the loud plants. in early veg, an elusive skunk smell of a nice quality, and now a full garden one week into flower and very subtle cat pee and only with nose on plant

last crop the nl5 skunk and master kush skunk made the place reek and now no smells at all

the resin has a minty fresh smell which i associate with good weed and the stem rub is urinal puck. the high is long lasting and enjoyable with no lingering effects

i don't quite combust my weed so all weed tastes good. this weed has a clinical leathery/lemon taste

@longball - really, the only way to know would be a lab test, but extracting it one’s self might also give a clue?

The reason for this post is that I’ve been wondering for a while if a competing pathway might be changing the skunk spray odor.

The flavoring from grapefruit, grapefruit mercaptan (aka thiol), is exactly the same structure as terpineol, and they co-occur. Obviously the alcohol becomes a thiol.

The skunk smell (partially) comes from 321MBT, but if you use the grapefruit mercaptan / terpineol analogy, there has to be an alcohol corresponding to 321MBT.

The alcohol corresponding to 321MBT is prenol. Prenol is the basic unit that makes all the isoprenes, ie the terpenes. So if prenol is being used effectively for terpene synthesis, it might not be available for 321MBT synthesis.

Furthermore, other terpene alcohols (again the example is terpineol) can compete with prenol forming other fruity or catpiss or coffee etc odors.

The presence of higher thc chemotypes is linked with terpene synthesis, but it’s not so well linked to potency.

So what does this wonderful community have, that is maybe lower terpene, or lower terpene and cannabinoid, but is still good?

Also: Terpenes are not the most significant odorant in cannabis.
Myrcene, linalool, caryophyllene, and humulene are major odorants, but a lot of the headspace of cannabis is benzaldehyde, c6-c7 linear aldehydes, thiols, and acetic acid. So low odor cannabis is absolutely “on the list” here, but a cannabis plant can be low ish terpenes and still smell like body odor or skunk or sour or cherry etc, it’s fairly complex for sure.

I have the same thought. Quite a few ideas that could make my work progress much better. Thank!

For me, if it didnt cost $125 per test.. id have all the results u could need, i made the mistake of sending away a bunch of pheno samples for testing from my grows, and the price was just not worth it.. $3500.
The worst part was how then the lab continued perfoming unwanted tests from my samples and used them publically on social media for their own clout.

I wish i could contribute more here, but this lab game has left a sour taste in my mouth lol.

Truly fascinating knowledge you have on terpenes though man, and as you point out.. terpenes are only part of the puzzle eh.

How much consideration does the combustion/vaporization for consumption play in your end results? I mean terpene A, B, C, D etc maybe all present naturally... but there must be dramatic and immediate changes happening depending on how the end product is consumed too? Ie what heats are applied, and potentially when or how - ie joint, cone, bong, vaporizer?
Seems a massive wormhole lol

Hash Plant from Sensi (buy in 2023)

I was very disappointed with this variety for precisely this reason, the lack of taste and smell. (Not to mention the lack of potency).

Apparently terpenes play a big role in the effect of plants, so I don't think there can be a variety with low terpenes profile and a whit a powerful effect.

In my opinion: more terpenes = more power

Low terps can be a sign of too much inbreeding, especially with a limited gene pool. A poor light spectrum can also contribute to the problem.

There have been rumours since 2020 that many Sensi mother plants have turned mutant, including the Hash Plant. The Covid period may have caused a big mess.
