Keeper Skunk Haze Grow

I’ll grow some shit 👌 The whole history of the various skunks circulating keeps the train going. They found an 87 skunk recently.

I think Nevil himself on this forum or in an old article says a fair bit about the breeding of the skunk and the early line and making a skunk 2. He also made his own version as many people have made inroads. Sk1 Sk2 Nev’s Sk Early Sk. 18.5. Are all selections out that old legacy seed the pre Dutch era and I’m not from it but there seems to be a lot of phenotypic forms showing from the genetics.

Nevil talks on the 18.5 the AfgT AfgS

I think at one point there was a lot more variety in the original cross and the name at F1 Polyhybrid. It has been taken many ways into other hybrids in its F1 f2 and so on forms of selection.

If you draw up a punnet it looks like the 18.5 would be in the really low recessive % of the Mendelian for some of the flowering traits when putting in the parental. Maybe totally undetectable until after progeny testing as some sulphur things develops in the cure. The more Afghan types perhaps plants with genotype sstt where codominance occurs but it could have been the 22 week plant that smelled like a rodent 😲

So you have this huge skunk gene pool at F1 level that don’t breed true yet. They segregate and have all forms of primary phyllotaxy/traits only some a small percent are those that would share a blend of unrelenting aromas or ‘plasticity’.

If i may.
Skunk#2 offered by the seed bank was an open pollination of skunk#1.
I'm unsure if even Sam kept the original #1 going very long, because none of his later offerings were/are anywhere near the freshness of the original skunk#1. Due i'm sure to It having been selected for speed resin and potency ever since, dragging it toward the afghan side, in my opinion..

Hi Grover

Can you, please, compare a little the classic SkHz to the Early SkHz?
I mean… I read your 2014 post.
Still of the same opinion ?
On paper the cross looks interesting … Early Skunk instead of the regular…
I just didn't spend enough time with Early Skunk Haze to be fair to it. I suspect that you may need to find the right plant for you...The Skunk Haze is pure haze tropical sativa joy (with some quicker floppy-armed catch croppers thrown in..) Early Skunk Haze is not as dominated by haze.. I can't see the best of Skunk Haze outdoors anywhere remotely North, so Early SK/Hz is that option...

My personal opinion is that unless it has early pearl girl or Pollyanna I don’t think it’s as good as it can be. I’ve grown a lot of cannabis and I’m not really gonna grow anything that was made post 2000. There isn’t any cannabis worth my time and space.

Skunk haze looks a lot like old juicy fruit.

With regards to skunk haze, NL haze or pearly haze, Afg haze

We know what’s the best cross as it won the cup and is in the pedigree.

Early skunk changed Holland. They couldn’t flower skunk or haze reliably until the Early Skunk.

I have grown a lot of skunk. Most of it isn’t skunky. I didn’t think the pure was anything special I’ve seen a lot of skunk crosses.

The crosses with the Early seem to add
Something that the skunk itself is missing with all its fragmented data.

Looking for those greasy ripe stinky plants. The further away from the seeds before they came to Holland the worse the skunk is. It’s the Way skunk performs from what I see. It’s good in hybrids but as it’s not a real seed type it doesn’t maintain itself as a variety with any potency. It’s like set to fail
as a variety with all its missing genetic data.
a lot of people say that about Shanti's gear.... a breeder is allowed to update his lines, it is allowed. It is about trust and the plant in front of you. It's also about knowing what you are growing, so expectation, I suppose. Many of these strains are presented as Easy-to-grow commercial style plants with lovely aromas, etc... and sometimes they are but sometimes it is a little vague and when you don't get what you think you will and you are disappointed you blame the breeder. In a way, that's fair enough as maybe they should have been more honest. A good example is La Niña - it is presented in a certain way White WidowxHaze - sounds lovely! In reality, it is a Quick Thai plant. The 'Haze' is a strain of easy-growing Thai from Oz (called Mullumbimbi Madness - I'm not sure if it is pure but it sure is Thai!) and if you grow out a pack you can tell straight away that the intention of the cross was to get all that was lovely about that Thai into a more practical indoor-growable Thai plant. You can see White Widow and think certain tings and expect maybe a Dutch style plant that gets you higher and less stones. It is not that. White Widow is 50% sativa and it is all in the selection... Some can be very Brazilian Sativa. My La Niña tastes like Thai and looks like Thai and smokes like Thai. It doesn't take as long and yields a bit better and anybody who ever grew Thai can tell you that a really GOOD Thai plant is very very hard to find and even if you have a great mother there is no guarantee about the offspring.. You must plant 50 Landrace Thai seeds to stand a chance.. and so Thai hybrids can take some selecting - White Widow or no White Widow...maybe not 50 plants but still you could easily plant a pack of La Niña and not find a Dutch Widow with Electric Highs -that is not what they are. Then you will be disappointed and come on here moaning about modern genetics, etc -like some old wizard who is 'in the know' wink wink. Let's put all that crap aside. History, story, exact genetic lineage - who cares? Is it a good plant? What is in front of you? Skunk Haze presents you with amazing aromas and incredibly tropical sativas. Are they practical for indoor growing? Not really, no - but if you ever tried to grow a pure haze indoors.... (my own O.Haze line, well, it hasn't been touched in years. I should actually renew the seeds before I lose them, tbh... ) you will understand the valuer of this line BUT you can find a practical plant in amongst the jungle.... The pungency and resin and quality of aroma are off the scales on every single plant... what is not to like? Don't turn your nose up at this line - it is great!

So, I harvested one of the three Longtime sativas and it has an astonishing aroma and pungency. Now that the shorter flowering girls are all out I can notice that these 3 DO have far less strawberry about them... It is the same aroma but a different mix. Far far more traditional hazy smells. The yield is stupid but so is the size of the plant. resin - crazy. I think that the smoke will be off the charts, judging by the smells and look and resign, etc... but I couldn't keep this plant, in all honesty. My grandad planted this seed and handed it down the generations before it finished flowering. We'll it feel that way, anyway! Finishing and harvesting it without any real problems feels like an achievement. I can't wait to smoke some. Maybe in 6 months or a year..
There are 2 left, now. One will harvest within a week and the last one.... well, I don't really understand it. It looks top quality. There are less leaves in the flowers and they are more compact, in a way... (still a tropical sativa - don't get me wrong..) but it look like it started flowering 3 weeks ago rather than 19 weeks ago... it's flowers are nowhere near mature... shocking. The three all smell different but I couldn't describe how, really. the aromas are complex and pungent and sharp and a bit sweet and a bit floral. There is a lot going on! With all the plants in one room it is actually hard to get an idea off each individual one. Sometimes I choose which plant to sniff before I even get in. Don't touch any other flower and sniff just that one plant. After that, any I do sniff just smell like whichever I chose first! sticky smells or something..

There is just no point in keeping or selecting one of these- even if you want them. I couldn't tell you on what criteria I would even start! In order to get to know one properly and grow it out at least 3 times... would take well over a year End on End. They all stink and are all lovely - why select one? Just plant the seeds when you want to grow one at it will be there.

Old Juicy fruit - I loved that plant. It is still around hidden in a lot of hybrids. Nothing wrong with that! I have a line of pure Jamaican Longtime sativa weed (21 week stupid weed) that I named Fruity Juice after that strain (although they are not at all related...! Just an homage and the mother's aromas reminded me of that a little bit)

If I had the time I'd crack a few Fruity Juice seeds and cross a good male to HBH

here is HBH drying, curing, stinking..
The end one is a bottle of this years red! Pinot Grovero. It was a great wine year this year. I skin up in an ice cream tub. Just invert the lid and instant tray! Once finished tip it all into the tub below to collect the 'Herbs de Amsterdam' for hash-making!!

you chose one of the skunked side - still a hazy sativa plant by the looks of it. I saw 2 like that but they had floppy ways and I HATE that. Good selection! You have a great eye for a plant. I bet it STINKS! My selection is more tropical.
Is this one closer to that tropical character you speak of ? (week 12 , maybe 2 left ..) She looks like a 50/50 blend , not to skunky, not to hazy

I really like La Nina . Sometimes jumpy , but for sports and hiking is great. Never knew about Thai heritage . I suspected that in a ASH pheno that’s currently drying ….beautiful design to that plant.. Long , curvy lines , baroque style composition, exotic and elegant .
So I presume this should be Souteastern Asian genetics..

Most people in this day and age are perhaps looking for a high yield plant suitable for rotations.

With NL5xSkunk and NLxAfghan, NLxNL available there is a lot to grow in the MNS listings. It’s gonna take me a while with no lights up.

The NLxHaze also as a moniker is perhaps a little more well known and slightly more indoor friendly.

The building blocks are all here ready to go 😀 I’ve been really impressed so far.

I was having a little zone out a while back looking at the farm thread thinking if you arrived there on the coach for the tour what would be the first thing you would do…

I’d wanna go roll up whatever it is Shanti is smoking 1st. Then we are hitting the widow and we can do the shark and the rhino.

Then it’s lunchtime 😝

I would like to see a Superskunk and NL5EpSk type as a breeding tool because a NL or a SK haze might be more tameable.

Somethings just need a little earlier push. If your not growing a commercial legal crop, unsupported, unprotected, they want to be triggering much much earlier than what some plants do
If i may.
Skunk#2 offered by the seed bank was an open pollination of skunk#1.

Sacred Seeds I think offered a Sk2. It was in the listings of the Catalogue of Seeds 84/5 all Variations were listed in their order of finishing. So Skunk 1 was an early type anyway the 1 perhaps pertaining to the chemotype or the Early characteristics. With Sk2 being a BTBD cross and having more aromas due to the genetic makeup.

Sunlight systems in my home town was selling some of these seed types before Nevil even had a catalog and OT1 and others were using seed pre Sam and Clarke

That's a lot of speculation fella. @Mate Dave
I think i know the ad to which your referring. We should be careful because there is more than one advert from Hightimes that are merely mock ups of how a legal market could look/operate.. I've asked a friend who has every issue of Hightimes to check it out..

Hmm, oldtimer1 although once a real person and no doubt a very nice chap, it all smacks of online myth creation more than anyone of real connections to the early Californian scene, he did however post a lot of useful how to's back in the day, which i'm very grateful for.

I feel we've derailed this thread enough.
If you'd like to speculate further perhaps we should continue in Pm's

Peace

@Grover Sativa those are some absolutely stunning ladies! You make Skunk Haze sound transcendent 🤩.
I am redoing the storage for my genetics, and guess what I found. Two whole straws of Skunk Haze! You have me so excited about these 😍. This sounds like a must have, for the vault.

Thank you for your amazing thread and everything you've shared about your experiences with this incredible chemovar!
