How many plants will actually have that typical SSH phenotype?

Hi everybody,

I do one grow per year for myself of about 3 sq. m. I can't do phenohunts and keep motherplants all year round. I wish it was different but we don't always get what we want.

What I'm looking for are strains that at least have a 50% ratio of delivering what it says on the package. For instance, if I pop 16 SSH seeds, I expect 3-5 females that have that typical SSH pheno.

Is this a realistic expectation or is this "one keeper per pack"?

In that last case, are there any strains here that can deliver what I am looking for or are these seeds for people who can phenohunt and keep motherplants? Any In-bred lines to be found here?

Thanks, BGC

I dont have experience with SSH, but have a really litlle room only..
I can tell you, that in my 4 plants max. searches, I always find something desirable atleast, aprox. each 2nd grow I found something stellar.

Few of my examples:
I have tried 3x seeds of WACO, found only one female, and it was real super keeper
Nordle some 6x seeds (I believe), from which one was total keeper
8x Northern Kush (tester seeds), 2-3 very desirable plants and one ultra keeper
Northern Widow (tester seeds) I have found mostly males, but one girl super wild sativa keeper I still have around

By desirable plant, I mean plant, that has better qualities, than what I used to grow earlier (Dutch Passion, Sensi Seeds, all the fem seeds, etc...)

So I believe, you dont have to worry, to not find anything.
Tho, for stellar plants, you will still need a decent pheno hunt.

*One more add, I was always satisfied with Black Widow outdoor ;)

Hope my litlle experience was helpfull :)

Really good answer from Ptree. A lot of it is down to luck, some people find a keeper in a pack some take a few packs. I cant remember who it was on instagram, I'll have a look later, it was someone like CSI or Mean Gene. But they had tried 4 packs of SSH from MNS and didnt find anything that they felt was worth keeping.

It might be worth asking Shanti his opinion when you do such limited runs, as he does do an off menu SSH IBL that in theory would produce a more stable line from seed. Or Mu might be worth asking as he has the most experience out of all of us active on the forums.

In my personal opinion, I am in a similar boat, I grow two plants at a time but all year round. I have yet to find something I consider a full on keeper, as one of my criterias for it being a keeper is that I dont get sick of it after smoking it for a few weeks.

Ptree man, I have to ask, whats the difference to you between a super keeper, a total keeper, ultra keeper and a super wild keeper? :P

SSH has been around here for quite awhile and can be considered an IBL. A keeper is a very subjective term. For most it involves potency. In addition, what about things like yield, stability, pest and disease resistance, ease of grow?
I believe you will find these qualities as well as other desireable characteristics in MNS seeds. SSH is a fairly consistent product that most people grow without complaint so your potential choice is a good one. I would support and encourage your decision to grow it. But as Shanti sez, “the proof is in the seed.” I’m confident you won’t be disappointed. Like @Ptree said, there are always several keepers found in each pack. @Swifty is our resident SSH guru here and another resource based on solid growing experience. Take a look at his grows. They’ll make you want to get growing that variety right now lol. Welcome to our family!

It was 707 seedbank and 3 packs. And exactly that mu, keepers are so subjective. Reading his post it looks like he was looking for a pretty plant more than effect.

I am an extreme convert to the proof is in the seed, I have only grown two plants at a time so it doesn't really give much of a chance for a keeper to pop through, but I am at the very beginning of my journey.

It was spelled just to sound better, and in non repetitive way :)
Waco was keeper I cry not to have cloned. So once I grew Northern Widow that was kinda like WACO, I cloned / reveged her / build 2nd smallest possible tent and mothered her :)

That is my Wild Northern Widow keeper I call Tropical Widow :)

I really miss the place to keep all those mentioned clones, as then I would need no more seed searching for some time :)

I have to say, you've tempted me by the waco, I've been thinking about it for a little while now and those than run it seem to think it's lovely.

That is also my goal, but for me the legality not to have to worry about having so many plants. It makes me sad to this day. Where I live, cannabis is the same schedule as heroin. Someone recently got jail for 0.2g!!!!!

Y, I know such countries :(
Iam yet to hear word legalization, but maybe it will happen this year,...

Waco I need to revisit again :)
Superb plant I got there

Like everyone else said, keeper is subjective. I grew out one straw of SSH, i had about a 70% female ratio and stupidly killed off a few mums who had thrown nanners becuase of my subpar grow skills and inconsistent grow environment (including light leaks). I really wish I hadn't binned ANY of the girls. Out of the roughly 8 girls I had finish, only 2 were plants that I wouldn't want to grow at least anothet time. Nearly every pheno was frosted, had an addictive aroma/flavor, helped ease tension, and was super happy weed. If you suffer from depression at all, get SSH.

Shanti has a few off menu IBl versions of his flagship strains, such as SSH IBL and Mango Haze IBL. My understsnding though is that the IBL versions will be slightly different than the normal version. The non-IBL version will give more phenotype exspressions. Regardless, the SSH I had was very consistent.

Also, several of the G13 crosses are IBL, such as G13Skunk, G13Haze, and others. Avoid the G13 crosses that have the reaquired G13, of you want an IBL version. Honesestly though, most of the strains here will throw out amazing phenos. The breeding is top notch.

What @Ptree said about Northern Widow reflects my experience. Killer! The SSH x Widow is the same. Not listed, you have to ask for it.
I would not hesitate on the newer G13 versions either- they have been around for 15+ years now and are considered IBL also. The G13 Haze is superb.
You are about to enter an exciting journey of discovery and it will all be worth it. So take that first step.
