you guys are forgeting 1 vital thing,,,,,,the Y chromozone used to be an X,,,,,but it lost a leg due to genetic load,,,yes,,,XX,,,,

read up on the Ratchet Theory,,,please,,,it details the evoloution of the Y chromozone from an X into a Y

muller first introduced the term "ratchet" in his 1964 paper,,

"Muller's ratchet" was coined by Joe Felsenstein in his 1974 paper, "The Evolutionary Advantage of Recombination"

Page and his colleagues discovered that the Y chromosome does swap genetic material. The twist is, it swaps with itself. The Y, Page’s lab learned, stores DNA as a palindrome that reads the same in either direction — like the name Otto, for example. “The palindromes on Y are spectacular,” Page said. “It has almost perfect left-arm-to-right-arm symmetry,” with only .06 percent divergence.

One thing scientists knew was true was genes on the Y did not come in pairs, which would mean that Y chromosomes are very young, evolutionarily speaking, only about half a million years old. “Now all of a sudden we realized genes on Y come in pairs, just not from Mom and Dad, but on the arms of the palindrome.” The arms of the palindrome engage in “nonreciprocal recombination,” folding over on themselves to “overwrite” faulty genetic material.

i was waiting for you to turn up darwin,,,

can you see any mistakes from me?,,,,pointing out any mistakes ive made would be fab from you as i know you have the qualification to say ;YAY or NAY

:)

good to see you,,,i frigin love you man,,,you know it!!:)

Darwin,
Well apparently "ONE seed company" was good enough for you not too long ago, so funny how things change once you read something you do not like lol. Hempy actually does what you were looking for, only it works against your pre-conceived notions and all of a sudden your original desire ceases to become relevant? lmao.

i'm never contradicted what i said there, growing up femmed seeds next to regular seeds of the same strains would be a good comparison (assuming the parents of both are closely related), however doing this comparison would only allow your conclusions to encompass THAT strain from THAT breeder... you haven't looked at the work of other breeders, or other strains etc in that comparison therefore you can't draw conclusions on those things. and again, were those seeds that hempy grew out created by selfing or cross pollination?

you need to look up a bit more on statistical analysis in science. you can't just look through a small window in your house, and then use what you see to explain what you would see out of many different windows of many houses all over the world. do you get what i mean? you have to sample many many many different samples, and show that the experiment is repeatable (ie. don't just do it once, get one result and say it's the once all end all of experiments that proves your point), to do it justice, hempy would have to get regular and femmed seed (S1 and cross pollinated seed) from 100s of strains from 10s of breeders, grow out 10 or so plants per strain and then do a decent statistical analysis on the data to be able to really know what's going on. IF he does that in time, and IF his results show what he believes to be the case, IF the statistics back it up and it's repeatable and others find the same thing... I"LL HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO AGREE, but while it's all still wild conjecture on the part of you guys with no real solid evidence or genetic knowledge to back up your harsh claims, i'm going to stick with the knowledge i've learned over the past 6 years of studying biology and genetics in university.

good to see you too mate, :D love that your current location now says a-dam! i'm very jealous you lucky bastard! haha i'm yet to read the entire thread as it took me the best part of 2 hrs while at work to write my first reply here... i finally clocked off now it's midnight so i might read it, but i might also have a smoke (in which case i'll be too high to think about these things and debate properly). it's funny seeing the same characters rising in these arguments, across threads and even now apparently across forums lol

Talk is cheap. Bring out your best fem seeds and we'll do a test.
N.

Talk is cheep neville i thort this post was honest and pictures sed all that had to be sed

F1 mum huge vigor.

F2 made from the F1 pictured X to the f1 brother grew huge.

S1 made from the F1 nothing close to her and 18 seeds were run the best strongest largest were keepet yet its not inuf well no offence but why would i want to run any more this batch of 18 sed it all.

Call me old fation call me a male canna plant fan but im not negleting the positives a male brings to the table the others can all they like and in years to come i will watch them try and seek out good breeding stock if theres any left .

JessE, just like hempy you have made the fundamental error in not being able to separate the different forms of feminized seeds, yes you can create them by selfing, but i'm sure a large portion if not the majority of people who are creating hybrids and even pure lines using the process of feminization are doing so with separate females, not the same, or clones of the same female..
Darwin,
Considering the attitude you've taken with this entire post, I find it humorous just how ill-informed you are on this subject. Apparently the elite clone hype, which goes hand in hand with the feminized seed trend has completely skipped over your head. So you're sure? Below are just two examples, of many, which was used to launch the current trend today. So I would recommend an attitude adjustment, young man.

and then automatically assume on top of that the only reason people/companies would do it is to rip people off, make huge profits, and could care less about research/preservation of cannabis and it's many lines. that's a ludicrous statement and/or thought, yes some and maybe even many companies may be doing this. but you can't claim ALL are. i received SSSDH S1 beta seeds recently FREE from rez himself

Oh wow, Rez himself huh? I guess I'm suppost to be impressed? lol

X and Y chromosones

Hello! Everyone...:) This is a nice subject to discuss, but you have to understand plant Biology to understand this about female plants? The one important thing you must understand, is that the molecular function of sex chromosones in sex determination and differentiation in plants, still remains largely unknown. Let me explain this the best I can? The DNA fragments unique to an X chromosone cannot be readily identified because the X chromosone is present in both males and females, So most on this subject matter about female seeds, get it wrong every single time. You can actually isolate a P-1 derived chromosone clone specific to the Y chromosone from the male genomic library. The sequence composition of the other regions of the Y and X chromosones, respectively has remained unclear. If I can explain methods just ask me. I believe that if you have quality genetic to start with, Female seeds should be just fine for the small grower in my opinion. resinbud,;)

Excuse me mate who are you trying to kid here ?.

Are you telling me 18 seeds and that all of the 18 showed a massive loss in vigor is not a valed asumtion that vigor is lost are you kidingf me.

What are the diffrent methods used to make fem seeds ? most wont even tell people how they make there fem seeds most are selling s1 seeds useing these so called elite clones to push these things onto the market and you know this if you dont you need to go and research things better.

Explane to me them my friiend and you have the back ground to do this why is it that the f2 made from the same f1 mum the s1 were had the same vigor as her mum made useing her brother from the f1 seeds yet the s1 do not.

Lets cut threw the bull shit of small numbers 18 seeds are more seeds than most fem seed sellers put in a pack they sell to people.

hempy, with all due respect my friend, i've just finished a post grad university course on experiment design and statistical analysis so i feel i'm qualified to answer this question. i will add i haven't read up on your experiment if you've written it up in a thread with all the necessary information so what i can argue is limited to what i've read in the last few pages here i admit.

the trouble is with your experiment, you've only used one replicate (the strain) with 18 samples of it, what did you use as a control, did you grow out a batch of regular seeds x 18 as a control group to compare the first replicate to? if not how do you know there's loss of vigour? and even if so, how do you know that the loss of vigour is directly attributable to them being feminized whether selfed or cross femmed? your experiment hasn't controlled for other factors like getting a bad batch of seed (ie, you didn't buy many many packs of the same strain and run them as separate replicates to compare with one another, as well as with the control). there could've been outside factors or inside ones that affected the quality of those seeds and could account for the loss of vigour - you haven't controlled for these variables because you only used one lot of 18.

as i stated above there are two different methods of making femmed seeds, and i've seed it before in other threads. you can take 2 females of distant or close relatedness and make them produce pollen THEN use each others' pollen on the other female (THIS IS NOT SELFING) this is equivalent to using a male to pollinate a distant or close related female. you've taken gametes from one, and mixed it with gametes from the other. this is cross pollination, and the genetic health of the offspring or F1s will be equal to the F1s produced by a male/female cross of the same relatedness/genetic heritage.

selfing - creating S1 feminized seeds, occurs whereby you take 1 individual and induce the production of male pollen and then fertilize its own flowers with it. (you can do this also in the same process as above cross pollination if you use 2 clones of the same female to reproduce with one another). and in this case, i wouldn't argue that it is MORE LIKELY that the F1 offspring will show loss in vigour and deleterious alleles pairing up and being expressed, however this can occur just in the same in IBLs... once you go past F1s and breed those sisters and brothers with each other to create F2s you've the same likelihood of getting deleterious alleles pairing up and loss in vigour. the maths is the same when you write it out mate. if you want me to do it i can.

anyway the trouble is, you can't just buy feminized seeds and say they're S1 if you don't know they are... if they were made by cross pollinating which i'm sure the majority of good breeders would do (why would they want shit products, if they want money it's better to be selling good products for a long time, not shit ones in the short time or people would move on fast) then they're as equally genetically healthy as the regular seeds of the same strain by the same breeder. the point is if you haven't looked into it, how can you be certain they're S1 or cross pollinated feminized seed? and if you don't know that, how can you then draw conclusions on the quality of S1 seeds?

you say "most wont even tell people how they make there fem seeds" and then in the same breath you finish with "most are selling s1 seeds useing these so called elite clones to push these things onto the market"... if they're not telling anyone, how do you know they're selling S1 seeds from elite clones onto the market?:confused::confused:
but i agree with you that S1 seeds MAY (not definitely but MAY) have lower genetic health, and if you're right and companies are doing this using elite clones, then yes shame on them if they know it's inferior quality seed they're charging twice as much for... but at the end of the day if you are skeptical of this, or even know for a fact it's the case.... DON"T BUY THEIR STUFF?! if john doe of the street wants to waste his money doing it what does it matter? he'll eventually come to the same conclusion as you when he realises it's shit seed like all the rest, and if they all don't and are happy with what they paid for, then clearly there isn't enough wrong with the seeds warranting such complaints? but yeah let me reiterate i'm not disagreeing with you that there are breeders out there who will be cutting corners, using shit practices to make dodgy seed only chasing a dollar, but this will always be the case with any aspect of life, and when it comes to cannabis this was (i'm sure) occurring much the same before the advent of feminization... it's not the processes/breeding mechanisms to blame it's the slack arse breeders who use these processes/mechanisms poorly who are to blame my friend. the only case of S1 fem seeds i know of for sure is that of rez's SSSDH S1s and he's given full disclosure about it and stated it from the go what it was, the only reason he made them for sale was because his customers asked him to!

"Explane to me them my friiend and you have the back ground to do this why is it that the f2 made from the same f1 mum the s1 were had the same vigor as her mum made useing her brother from the f1 seeds yet the s1 do not."

i'm a little confused here, "the F2's made from the same f1 mum the s1", does this refer to seed made from an F1 female by selfing it to create S1 (F2) seeds (should it be S2?)? you'll have to explain it a bit more than that to me sorry i can't picture the crosses.

mate you've totally missed the bus on this one... looks like you've just scanned what i've said and tried to find parts you can take out of context to make your own arguments.

when i stated rez gave me them himself this wasn't to hype me or him up... i'm just saying, clearly he's not hiding or pretending they are something other than selfed feminized seeds, he's in contact with all those people he's given them to as testers so that he can see the results and MAKE THEM PUBLIC to all others interested in his product. so this is a little different from what i've heard and read about greenhouses seeds co. etc. and whether or not he's ripping off mr nice's work isn't part of this argument... this is about femmed seeds and their quality compared to the same regular seeds. it's relative. i have no doubt mr nice's gear is better and i have the utmost respect for both shanti and neville for always being original and at the forefront of breeding.

as i said, i agree with you, there are surely companies and breeders out there using shit practices to create dodgy products in a get rich quick scheme... this will be to their own demise though as people like you, hempy, me and anyone else interested enough to research it won't be buying their shit. however, just because they themselves use feminizing techniques to make seed that is shit doesn't mean it was the feminizing techniques that are to blame, it's the quality of their plants, the quality of their selection and breeding, etc. your post just oozed "all femmed seeds are bad S1 low vigour rubbish no matter what! simply because they're femmed seeds" which isn't a fair statement at all as i there are decent breeders out there who are more interested in quality work and reputation than making quick money. not everyone is in it to rip others off.

"put it in context? S1 seeds are MORE LIKELY to be inferior
This is like taking candy from a baby lol."

i'm not even sure what your point was about that? i stick by what i said, note "more likely" not "ALWAYS/DEFINITELY inferior" as you and hempy seem to believe.

at the end of the day even if initial inbred selfed progeny lose vigour because of inbreeding depression... this is more or less to be expected when you inbreed with such a low effective population size (in this case.. 1 lol) however, if you then kept breeding them by whatever means it's a possibility that the initial deleterious alleles that paired up in the initial S1 production and were shown, once selected against and removed from the population, you would increase the vigour of your plants, as once the plants with mutations/defects causing lack of vigour are culled those genes aren't passed on into future generations. this has been seen and shown to work out beautiful in some cases of founder effect / inbreeding depression, here's an example with another 2 examples listed, the mauritius kestral had an Ne of 4-5 individuals in the 1970s (only 4-5 individuals to produce the next generation), and today their population numbers in the 1000s and is healthier (though it still came from VERY inbred line, originating from those 4-5 individuals), why? because mutations were eliminated early on in recovery of the population when there would've been an increased mortality rate because of mutant alleles pairing up in offspring. here's the info below

"While some apparent inbreeding depression was noted in the captive birds[citation needed], it was certainly lower than might be expected given that the effective population size was maybe 5 individuals during the mid-1970s. It is known that several genetic lineages of Mauritius Kestrels have disappeared entirely during the 20th century population decline[citation needed]. However, the debilitating effects of DDT accumulation on the birds' health, and not inbreeding, are considered to have been the major cause for the failure of Temple's breeding program[citation needed].
The evolutionary history of the birds seems to hold clues as to why (Groombridge et al. 2002): Mauritius is a volcanic island, and although the colonization of the island by kestrels cannot be dated with high precision, it was almost certainly some time before volcanic activity died down. The Mauritius Kestrel population seems to have survived a prolonged period of volcanic activity, which must have kept the population small and fluctuating as habitat, food, and kestrels were destroyed by volcanic eruptions time and again. As near-panmictic conditions were sustained for many generations, alleles that might cause inbreeding depression were steadily removed by means of natural selection. The phenomenon that effective population sizes as low as 4-5 can be tolerated without pronounced inbreeding depression is also known from other small-island birds, such as Petroica traversi or the Laysan Duck."

anyway it's 1am and i'm fucked... i'm going to have a smoke and hit the hay :D sorry if i came across a bit harshly jesse and hempy, i mean no disrespect, i'm just getting frustrated with arguing this topic. if you re-read what i've written here tonight you will see i do agree with you for the most part, but i just don't think you can draw this all encompassing veil over all femmed seeds as being shit, when it's not so black and white. for all the bad guys out there i know there are as many (hopefully more) good guys.

Mate with all due respect i have done a study ( self educated) (Science- systematically acquired knowledge that is verifiable.) on cannabis and devoted over 30 years of my life a very big part of them years on the species called cannabis i dont care what you think or rick thinks or any one thinks becouse you guys are plucking thearys and notes from texts books that are still being debated by scientists so lets cut threw all this crap.

The reality of this is such you dont know or dose rick or do the others supporting fem seeds know what a male takes to the union or its importance and you dont know or will you know what damage these fem seeds will play that are all ready being grown and being breed to other regula seeds that are being past out to others to be grown will play in yerars to come do you.

I have shown you respect ye t why not show me the same here you come in throwing your science degre about but how many cannbis plants have you infact grown how many have you breed to produce seed and how many of them seeds have you grown out ?.

Why is it people like Neville and Shanti are not produceing fem seeds do you think honestly there not makeing advancements in there field of study think agine there are real resons people are steering clear of these seeds.

Like it or not this experement was and is valid not only do i know the line im growing i have run it since 2002 non stop i ran all the test seed in 2002 18 i belive f1s know all by memorry affect smells look and made the f2s ran inuf to know the selection of the male was positive look at the pic she looks good correct.

The s1 like it or not are nothing like the f1 or f2 18 is not a small number not one person selling fem seeds puts that number in a pack even so why not just admitt that they lost vigor and its not from inbreeding as the f2s showed as much figor as the mum so do you think that maybe the lack of the male played a role i sure do.

Neville asked a few good and valid questions why did no one rick even try to answear them.

Muller's ratchet
-(named after Hermann Joseph Muller and a mechanical device) is the process by which the genomes of an asexual population accumulate deleterious mutations in an irreversible manner.

Muller's ratchet-basically says sexual reproduction is greater than asexual reproduction rick correct ?

what role does the Y chromosome play? Was the question AND I ran a search and posted info on what role the Y chromosome plays i think its funny the pro fem activists throw peas corn and any thing they can find yet you dont say boo but when i post info of the Y chromosome you react lol.

Was the info good yes it was just admitt it.

Thanks for the Info Hempy!
I was told by old hippie grower in the 70s to take a closer look at Human DNA and genetics if I wanted to gain understanding. He said there were many similarities. He was a Princeton Man.

N.

i myself actually hate fem seeds , from my own experiences with them (bought or my own)

i just harvested a plant that was a very very good yeilding plant eventhough it did hermie and polinate itself (bottom half all seeds)

ill germ some of her seeds and grow them out and let everyone know my results (in about 4 months lol)

but so far any selfed seeds ive grown have produced just as well as the original plant did , including THAT DAMN HERMIE TRAIT

hempy sometimes it might sound like im not agreeing with you but thats not exactly the case , i just wanna see more debate about this but with tests on canabis not humans (dont care who says they are similar lol)

Jesse mate you've totally missed the bus on this one... looks like you've just scanned what i've said and tried to find parts you can take out of context to make your own arguments.

Well what did you expect from a guy who is way way over his head, now that this thread has become about bio poor jesse is lost and others are just plain old ignorant, or can't read, or cant agree to dissagree about the grey area... And I'm not talking about the coffee shop.lol

An S1 x S1= S2 A real good breeder IMO, if properly tested .

Hi Wally,
Thats a strange way of formulating your question, are you attempting to say the need to feminize female plants will give you a better understanding of what they have to offer through the S1 product? IF this is your position, it would ultimately seem the public is being used by these feminized seed producers as guinea pigs to test out what their elite clones hold.

And I can guarantee you most would not be happy to learn they're being used in such a fashion, and often times paying extra money for doing so. Because most are not buying these seeds to do research, but rather to obtain "elite" lines and by pass the hard work of selection, in lue of maximizing their profits through the lense of the sensimilla product. Not to do research for these so called "breeders", at an extra-ordinary price at that.

With this question, it would indeed seem that you're proposing the real purpose of feminized seed is to do research, rather than offer an "elite" product, which has been for sometime the position many have taken in justifying the feminized seed trend. So this is now an extraordinary jump in defense of the feminized industry, one which ultimately fails to hold up to reason for the above specified reasons. People are not buying these feminized seeds to do research, that is anything but the case in fact.

So if you're indeed proposing the feminized seed industry is now a tool to look further into what these select females have to offer via research, it would seem you're suggesting the feminized products on the market are nothing more than a mass experiment. One which the public is unaware of, and has been marketed to them under false pretences. At an otherwise expensive experiment at that.

I would say, like others previously, the feminized seed trend is meant to capitalize on the publics ignorance and take them to the bank. Filling seed producers and seed sellers pockets, not to do research or offer an elite product. Because as hempy's experiment has previously demonstrated, the S1 plants are a far cry from the original elite mothers, or even F2s made by natural means. The feminized S1's are in fact inferior to the original naturally bred F1s.

With the price most companies are charging for their feminized seed, with this reasoning above one would expect the seed numbers from the product the public buys to be greater than usual. However most are still filling orders with the usual 10-15 seeds per order. If Hempys 18 seeds were not enough to tell the proper story, though more than what these feminized seed producers offer, what exactly is your point wally? That most of these companies should be offering more seed per feminized purchase? Because as it stands, hempy used a greater number of seed than most would normally acquire and was still able to show the detriments of the S1 process. So what will the public find, with an even smaller population to work from?

A whole lot of mediocrity!

NO jesse as usual you are mis interpreting what ive said , ,you do that a lot i notice ..
I have been talking about researching your genetics prior to making hybrids with males x female , that is what selfing can be used for , research ..
My point was that if hempy can see a use for reversing males to research ,, how come he cant see a use for doing that to females ... /???????

or will he then be beginning to spiral out of control and our dimension may cease to exist having made some feminized seeds .. lol ...

I never disagreed about the guys we know we are all talking about ,, they are lazy and taking short cuts ,
lets face it we know hempy has a huge crush on arjan , thats what we are talking about here isnt it???
No one here is agreeing with the shoddy way some companies are conducting their breeding practices ..

i myself actually hate fem seeds , from my own experiences with them (bought or my own)

i just harvested a plant that was a very very good yeilding plant eventhough it did hermie and polinate itself (bottom half all seeds)

ill germ some of her seeds and grow them out and let everyone know my results (in about 4 months lol)

but so far any selfed seeds ive grown have produced just as well as the original plant did , including THAT DAMN HERMIE TRAIT

hempy sometimes it might sound like im not agreeing with you but thats not exactly the case , i just wanna see more debate about this but with tests on canabis not humans (dont care who says they are similar lol)

Why the hell would you germ known hermi genes? they will not be female seeds they will be females, males and plenty of herms in there because thats what you breed...
