hi all
firs of all I'd like to make a few remarks :
to moonunit : the grosse lisse is indeed one of the old french cultivars but there must be at least 20 types of grosses lisses depending on their origin, there are still cultivated but some more typical cultivars such as marmande tomato is preffered to it. I'm not aware of the german one. You can contact some collectives that are implicated in the conservation of old tomato varieties, I'm sure they would be ready to help you, but I'm more into carrots and onions at the moment (cannabis should follow quite soon)
to Krk: your posts are always nice and interesting, sorry for the earlier remark, I just though you wanted to be impressive, even so the article was interesting but not so much linked to the topic. but you're totally right that some people were just waiting for that; anyway thanks for inviting me to the other forum.
to nevil and kopite you (nevil) must have been able to some heck of experiences at that time... I would have loved to. Nevertheless, I must say that a
hermaphrodite plantt is a plant that bears male and female sex on the same plant, in the same
flower such as the big majority of angiospermes with the sepals, then petals, then stamens (male) and finaly stigmate (femelle).
a
monoecious plant has male and female sex on the same plant, on the same inflorescence or on different inflorescences. the inflorescence bears flowers.
a deoecious plant has only one type of sex on the plant;
researchers accepts the fact that cannabis may somtimes show some hermaphrodite characteristics with male flowers produced from female flowers (typically what can be seen with sex reversion).
Even if some people think it is stupid, I believe using the right terms is more proper especially in quite specific talks like that.
a sex reversed plant is herma
a normal "herma" plant is monoecious
a normal "normal" canna plant is deoicious.
I believe that Nevil's therory of Xm/Xm (scientific way of writting X'/X') versus X/X real femal chromosomes is very interesting, it could very much explain a lot of things, nevertheless one must no forget the theory of the ratio X/Y for sex determinism :
if the ratio is 2 (2X/0Y, not very mathematical but nevermind) it gives a femal
if the ratio is one (1X/1Y) it gives a male
odd ratios such as (3X/1Y) gave only female in previous experiments
this would tell that the Y chromosome hasn't got any factor for determining the sex, only the ratio is important, but this is a theory.
we have to be aware that even the most up to date researches (especially the G. Mandolino's team working on hemp) are still not sure of how sex determinism works,
it is well known that plants turn from allogamy to autogamy every so ofter so does herma plant turn to dioecious plants (because of male or female sterility mutations). these a natural mechanisms that are very usefull to get diversity (heterozygote with allogamy) and then to switch into a conservation mode (autogamy/homozygote plants).
My last remark
to myself
Nobody has talked about the heterogamic cross that happens in cannabis (like in every other angiosperme) : the mother plant gives all the cytoplasmic genetical material and, as know, many traits are linked to mitochondrial or chloroplastic genes such as sterility and resistance to pest or herbicides.
The use of sex reversion could also be a very useful tool to change the ways of cross (Afemale x Bmale or Amale x Bfemale) and so change who gives the cytoplasmic material . this needs to be worked on.
I just had a quote I wanted to do
You see I like males ( In a non homo-erotic kind of way). It was the Haze males that gave us so much, not the females
I believe it was just the way it was, it that case, the favourable traits were kept in a plant that turned to be a male, but it is not because it was a male that the traits given were good.
I'm being told off by my girlfriend... time to eat!
cheers
